The Afro-Semitic Experience will present the premiere of a new work, Exodus to Emancipation, at Congregation Mishkan Israel, 785 Ridge Road in Hamden, Connecticut. The concert is part of Congregation Mishkan Israel’s Confronting Racism series. This series has been offering ongoing opportunities since 2020 to increase understanding of systemic racism both historically and in current times.
Exodus to Emancipation is a new jazz song cycle from The Afro-Semitic Experience, a seven-piece ensemble co-founded by bassist and composer David Chevan and pianist and composer Warren Byrd. This project explores the legacy of slave songs from both the African American and Jewish traditions, intertwining historical research with creative musical interpretations and original compositions. Through this work, the Afro-Semitic Experience seeks to evoke the emotional depth of enslavement and liberation, offering a musical journey that bridges two histories of struggle and resilience.
