10:00 AM to 1:00 PM: Storm Stories - Teaching Art Through Storytelling with Ricco DiStefano

Who doesn’t love a good storm? When I was a boy growing up in Eastern Washington, storms would pass late in the summer, bringing high winds. I would hug the ponderosa pines and feel the swaying as I watched their bases rotate in the sandy soil. I even climbed to the very top and rode the 100-foot trees like a carnival ride as they swung back and forth, disregarding the danger. My father almost had a heart attack when I told him of this years later.

I loved the smell that a powerful rainstorm would bring. I found it soothing and grounding. I always called it ozone, though I'm not sure that's the best definition. But it is sublime.

I’ve visited the Oregon coast countless times throughout my life. And though I find the gray, rainy weather in my home of Seattle depressing, in contrast, when I am on the shores of Oregon, I find it beautifully romantic and soul-soothing.

When I travel deserts and plains, I cherish the storms I’ve had the honor of experiencing.
When I see and feel all of these many different natural phenomena, I awe at the colors my artist's eyes see. My mother always told me that I saw the world through colorful eyes.

So now, I bring to the canvas these moments that I capture and hold in my spirit and let the music flow through me in an explosion of color and feeling. All painted from memory. My only hope is that my landscapes resonate and bring the beauty of nature's power, fury, and comfort to the viewer of my work.

Each of my paintings, even if it's not blatantly evident, tells a story: At any moment in our life, we are either in the midst of a storm, have just made it through one that is now behind us, or one is imminently approaching from the horizon. This is my metaphor for life. And even though life brings many challenges, my storms give me a sense of solace and hope that I can weather them all.

Come experience this world with me. I only hope my work brings you comfort and a momentary escape from our overly hectic and perceptibly serious lives.

THE ART OF ESCAPE:
When creating in the studio with Dianne, time loses its sharp edges—you forget about minutes and hours, and instead measure in brushstrokes or pencil marks. The act itself—whether it’s blending paint, sketching a curve, or layering shadows—becomes almost meditative.

Peace comes from letting go of judgment and slipping into flow, where your hand seems to move on its own, guided by something deeper than thought. Even mistakes soften; they don’t feel like failures, but opportunities that lead somewhere unexpected. Your breathing steadies. Your inner chatter quiets. It’s just you and the work, and in that space, there’s no pressure to be anywhere or anyone else.

The peace is both still and alive—like standing in a gentle current. You’re carried, but you’re also choosing each movement. And when you step back from the piece, even if it’s unfinished, you feel lighter, more present, as though the act of creating has untangled something inside you.

What better reminder is there to practice the art of escape, and focus on our ‘happy’ than a painting of the ultimate escape, Cannon Beach, OR.
