10:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Fossil Hike with a Geologis

Colter Davis, geoscience professor at Utah State University, will lead a hike near the Mt. Carmel Junction to look at the crinoid-rich limestone of the Middle Jurassic Carmel Formation. This rock unit is full of ooids and star-shaped crinoid columnals of the crinoid Isocrinus nicoleti. He will discuss the details of these fossils and the depositional history of when Utah was partially covered by an epicontinental seaway.

Owls play an important role in the environment. Join Wasatch Mountain State Park Ranger, Kathy Donnell, her husband Joe (retired Utah Park Ranger), and a live Great Horned owl as they educate us on the importance of owls in the ecosystem. Dissect an owl pellet to learn what they eat and how they help our planet. Participate in a discussion on ways people of all ages can protect the future health and prosperity of owl populations.

The Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians call this land home. As keepers of the land, they will speak, sing, and demonstrate their use of nature through clothing, language and song showing a sense of place where they were created.

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM - Spaceship Earth: What Can I Do to Help?

Laurie's favorite class in college was entitled “Spaceship Earth,” a term coined by Buckminster Fuller around 1952. "On the first day of class, we were asked to close our eyes and “imagine we’re on a spaceship, way out in space. We’ve only got so much air, so much water...” I got it right away! That’s us, Earth. We have a limited amount of resources that will not be replaced!

These are the kind of stories I share in my multimedia presentation, Spaceship Earth: What Can I Do? along with art, photography, science, and live music! While having fun, folks learn simple actions we can all take for a healthier planet. This engaging presentation encourages the use of both the left and right parts of the brain, making for an even stronger impact."

For our evening yoga class, we will be focusing on RADIANT HEALTH with a bow toward stress reduction through breath and body work. This will be a gentle, decompressing class, preparing us for sleep and for the surrendering of any of the day's challenges. Everything around us in this beautiful Red Rock area of Utah shows us that things are changing, even if very slowly. We are also constantly changing and evolving to fit the stressors we are subjected to. We will be mindful as we do some poses that help restore and heal our bodies and hearts.

9:30 AM - 1:00 PM - Mansard Trail Hike

Enjoy sweeping views of the area while hiking from the desert floor to the mesa top. After a short scramble, we'll rest to take in the views (at what I like to call "Turtle Rock") and then continue along the trail through a mature Juniper forest. Once at the petroglyph site, we’ll ponder why those who came before us chose to decorate this place, and what they may have been hoping to convey.

Always show respect when visiting rock art sites! Never touch, deface, trace, slide on, or otherwise damage rock writing. Do not make markings or signatures on any of the rock surfaces around the site. Leave the sand where it is. Do not dig holes or brush sand off the rock writing panel. Leave No Trace.

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Environmental Service: Weed Removal from BLM Land

Join Bureau of Land Management staff in removing weeds on Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Johnson Canyon. We will be cutting and bagging flowers and seed heads of Scotch thistle, a noxious weed that can spread dramatically if not controlled. Bring work gloves, pruning shears (short), and trimmers (longer) if you have some to use or to share (good to put your name on them). Help protect and restore our public lands and enjoy the beauty of Johnson Canyon.

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM - Growing Native Plants in our Desert Communities (Orderville)

Native plants are essential to humans and for maintaining urban ecosystem health. What are some of the best ways to grow native plants in the various desert environments of southern Utah? Through demonstrations and dialog, learn how to amend the soil, propagate seeds, and identify a few good examples of native plants that will attract pollinators.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM - California Condor Reintroduction & Recovery

In the 1980s, the historical population of California Condors declined dramatically to just 22 individuals. That’s when the greater California Condor Recovery Program was initiated to save the species from extinction. As of April, 2024, there are approximately 90 condors flying in the rugged canyon country of northern Arizona and southern Utah while the total world population of endangered California Condors numbers more than 550 individuals. More than half of them fly free in Arizona, Utah, California, and Mexico. Even though this is an incredible conservation success story, the recovery still faces challenges in achieving the ultimate goal of a self-sustaining population.

The primary threat to Condor recovery is poisoning from the ingestion of carcasses that have been shot with lead ammunition. More recently, avian influenza has set recovery in the southwest back at least a decade with the recent loss of 21 birds. The Peregrine Fund continues its work on behalf of the Condor through captive breeding, releases to the wild, monitoring, and addressing the primary threats in to this iconic vulture species.

In 1996 Washington County Utah made history when it became the first County ever to receive approval for a countywide “Habitat Conservation Plan” to protect an endangered species. This cooperative effort complies with the Endangered Species Act and affords protection to the endangered Mojave Desert Tortoise. The initial effort was not without controversy, but today the resulting Red Cliffs Desert Reserve has become a valuable asset to the region, protecting an area of abundant and unique biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. Come learn about the extraordinary biodiversity within its borders.

9:00 PM - 9:45 PM - Vital Signs: Taking the Pulse of the Planet (documentary film)

Our planet is a beautiful and awesome place. In a new video, join NASA scientists on a 40-minute visual tour of Earth from space, presented at the IMAX Theater at National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. on September 10.

“Vital Signs: Taking the Pulse of Our Planet" was the theme for NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center's fifteenth installment of its annual lecture and reception sponsored by the Maryland Space Business Roundtable.

Earth is a complex, dynamic system we do not yet fully understand. Like the human body, the Earth system comprises diverse components that interact in complex ways.

On this global tour, scientists lead the viewer through Earth’s water cycle, forests and frozen regions as seen through the eyes of NASA’s Earth observing satellite fleet. They share a story of how we can make life better today and into the future.

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM - Habitat Connectivity in Southern Utah

Wildlands Network is creating a movement across the continent to connect and restore natural habitats so that wildlife can roam freely and thrive. Learn about habitat connectivity in Southern Utah and the importance of migration corridors such as for the Paunsaugunt mule deer herd. Wildlands Network works with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR), local landowners, and a coalition of other nonprofits to create landscapes in Southern Utah that are beneficial for both wildlife and humans.

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM - Hopi Agriculture, Weaving, and Pottery

Traditional cultural practices of dry farming and cultural arts of weaving and pottery will be presented by Hopi Woman and cultural knowledge-holder Evvy Lynn Trujillo.

Evvy is from the village of Mungapi near Tuba City, AZ, and has been creating pottery and weaving baskets for 28 years. Evvy was taught that everything she needs to create both pots and baskets is provided by Mother Earth. She says, “I am very grateful for each day and I try to always look for the positive in every situation. I respect Mother Earth and love where I live.”

The sacred power of the desert wilderness is its capacity to stun us with stark beauty and a direct experience of the overwhelming power of the Creator.  An extended sojourn in the silence of wilderness invites, even forces us, into a deeper encounter with our interior lives and all the stifled emotions and intuitions screaming at us for reform.  Once we have emerged from the wilderness, we need an order of life that keeps us constantly in touch with our interior lives and a practice for sustainable living. This discussion will consider the model of the monastic village guided by the Rule of Benedict as a sustainable order of life.

Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty is a feature length documentary (78 mins) that examines the trajectory of Udall's life from his childhood through his Mormon mission, his World War II service, his student years at the University of Arizona, his time in Congress, and then, most significantly, his years as Secretary of the Interior under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, focusing on his effectiveness as a dedicated, bi-partisan public servant.

Udall tried always to acknowledge his mistakes while also doing his best to find common ground within the political process and was the first public official to speak out about global warming.

Secretary Udall was a well-respected author who called on all Americans to move away from our emphasis on economic growth and consumerism toward quality of life, and a new political ethos centered on beauty, simplicity, appreciation of nature and the arts, and a recognition of Earth's limits - a message that still resonates today!

We’ll begin with a conversation about the wise use of light at night, followed by a laser constellation tour and spectacular views of deep sky objects at the eyepiece of SVO’s powerful telescopes.

10:00 AM - 11:30 PM - Tilted Mesa Mountain Bike Ride

Join mountain bike enthusiasts for a 4-mile group ride on the Tilted Mesa trail system led by Kanab resident, Josue Rivera, following the outermost trails on the mesa. Beginning on the Morning Glory East trail, bikers will ride up across the saddle, and then return by the Western Legends trail back to the starting point. This ride will take about 1.5 hours to complete.

Bring your bike, safety equipment, water, hat, sunscreen, and anything else you deem necessary for the ride!

12:00 PM - 2:30 PM - Archaeology Stewardship Site Visit

Join local archaeologists from the North Kaibab Ranger District, and Sharron Evans, regional coordinator for the Arizona Site Steward Program, for a guided tour of a magnificent archaeological site. The Catstair Canyon Petroglyph and Pictograph Site is part of Utah's Cultural Site Stewardship Program where you’ll see petroglyphs and pictographs representing thousands of years of human history.

After a very easy walk along a sandy wash, enjoy your lunch as the archeologists share their knowledge and discuss historic era and current uses of the canyon. Sharron Evans will speak about her experience with the Site Steward Program and how you too can be a good steward of our shared heritage.

10:15 AM - 11:45 AM - Bird Walk at Jackson Flat Reservoir 2024

Beginning and experienced birders are welcome at this event where at the 2023 Amazing Earthfest Bird Walk we saw over 25 species! For the event we’ll amble along a walking and cycling path around the reservoir for approximately 1.5 hours, covering about 2 miles. The paved path has a few slopes, and is stroller, wheelchair, and bike accessible. Please do not bring dogs because they will spook the birds! Bring binoculars if you have them.

The Nomad Cafe offers an intimate location for both budding and experienced poets to express thoughts and feelings for southern Utah’s majestic land and scenery, and the natural beauty of the Earth. Bring a poem that inspires you, or one of your own poems or short prose to share, or even create one in the moment! Several members of the Willow Wind Poets, a local chapter of the Utah State Poetry Society will be present.

All national park lands are Indigenous lands. Who are the 11 modern Tribes associated with Grand Canyon National Park today? Join Park Ranger Doug Crispin for an insider’s look at the recent place name changes, native relations, and history in the National Parks.

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM - Learn How to Make a Portable Stove

At this event we will craft a portable cob camp-type stove at Clucking It Up Farmstead, in Orderville, Utah. Anyone interested in creating one during the demonstration will need to bring with them a 12 quart (or larger) galvanized bucket and a 3 foot length of re-bar or other similar rod or pipe. We will be mixing cob (clay, sand and straw) to use as the insulator in our stoves. After mixing the cob, we will move on to shaping and forming the interiors of our stove. Then we’ll share how to fire and use the stoves.
