Letter From The Chairs

Happy New Year! 2022 was another busy year for the museum. We completed a number of needed renovations to the building and grounds including a complete make-over of Baker Hall, new flooring in the upstairs hallway and staff offices, and resurfacing the parting lot. Plans to replace all grass on the property with native plants is currently underway.

Congratulations to loe Anderson for winning our Leah Bork Volunteer Award given to volunteers who continually exhibit a high level of commitment and dedication to the museum. Not only has Joe served as our board treasurer for 20 years, he also acts as a docent for our walking and step-on bus tours. Joe is always quick to jump in to help when the museum is in need of a last-minute tour docent Thank you, Joe, for all you have done and continue to do for the museum!

The spring holds numerous events you don't want to miss particularly the Museum's Shrimp Gumbo Staff and volunteers are busy gearing up for the annual Golf Tournament coming m April, which will again be hosted by the Golf Club at North Hampton, an Arnold Palmer designed course.

A new temporary exhibition entitled "Preserving Amelia", curated by AIMH, is on display in Jacksonville International Airport's Sky Gallery until June 1st as part of the JAA Arts & Culture Program. We appreciate the Amelia Island Tourism Development Council for their support.

The exhibit charts the development of historic preservation efforts in Fernandina presented in maps, photographs, and artifacts from the 1972 demolition of the historic Keystone Hotel. Our 2023 exhibitions in the Museum's Temporary Gallery will explore local (hemes. The annual student led exhibit "Advertising Amelia', opening in March, takes a look at Amelia Island as defined through historic and contemporary media. Exhibits later in the year will cover the local pottery scene and the portrayal of Amelia Island in him and fiction. We hope to see you around the museum!

Sincerely, Co-Chairs Susan Bonnctt and Bill tilson

Treasure of the Quarter

In today's world we are constantly concerned with protecting our Identity and ensuring we are not a victim of fraud. Unfortunately, this is not a new thing specific to our generation. In 1902 the G.W. Todd and Co., Rochester. NY began manufacturing a device to ensure checks, notes, bonds, receipts, letters of credit and other documents were legitimate. The Protectograph System (Model H). found in our archives, accomplished this task. It was used to print checks or stamp a "watermark'' type image directly onto the document. The owner's manual assures the user that if used correctly, the Protectograph System will give you satisfaction. The manual does note that you must use the machine according to directions in order to benefit from its protection. "Merely owning the machine will not protect you unless you stamp it property on all your checks."

Though the thief s methods have changed over the years, the intent has not. Be safe in the New Year!

Volunteer Spotlight

Karen Tonner

"I came to Femandina Beach in March of 2019 from The Villages Florida; transitioning from in person work to remote work for the Moffitt Cancer Center.

My early education started in Tulsa Oklahoma, then to St. Louis getting my advanced education from Washington University in the field of Radiation Oncology. I worked in Oncology clinics doing the physics computer planning for the delivery of radiation treatments for cancer patients. I worked 16 years in Colorado; moved to Arkansas (or 8 years and then moving to Florida working for the Moffitt Center.

I retired a year ago and have been thrilled to get a chance to start training with the Amelia Museum of History here on the Island giving historic tours. During these last few years I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff of the museum PLUS all of the wonderful volunteers that have been so open to sharing their knowledge with a newcomer like me.

We are so lucky to live in a place that has such a preserved and interesting history and I look forward to sharing it with visitors coming to our beautiful island."
