Pioneers of Equality: Seeds of Women’s Suffrage in Fernandina with Kathleen O’Dea

In 1920 women finally won the right to vote with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. It was a long and difficult road that spanned eight decades. Women’s Suffrage grew out of the efforts to abolish slavery. During that fight, women abolitionists realized the need for equality of all Americans, no matter their gender or race. This realization drove them to persist in the face of many challenges. One of the most difficult challenges came from the Southern states who resisted equality for both Blacks and women.

In November's Brown Bag talk, docent Kathleen O'Dea will look at Fernandina’s unique history that contributed to a different perspective toward women’s equality for a post-Civil War Southern town. As the first to hold integrated elections in the South, Fernandina played its part in the early roots of the Suffrage movement.

Attendance is free, and attendants may bring their lunch. Seating is limited on a first come, first served basis. This program is wheelchair accessible.
