April 10, 2025
Spring may bring warmer days and blooming flowers, but it also marks one of the most active seasons for severe weather.
From thunderstorms and tornadoes to flooding and high winds, extreme weather can strike with little warning - making preparation more important than ever.
At the American Red Cross, we know that being prepared ahead of time can make all the difference. That’s why we’re here to help you take simple, lifesaving steps to protect yourself and your loved ones before disaster strikes.
You can prepare today by making a plan to stay safe, gathering important supplies and knowing how to stay connected.
As storms become more frequent and intense, the Red Cross is responding to nearly twice as many major disasters as we did a decade ago - meaning your preparedness today can help us all build a more resilient tomorrow.
That’s why we’re inviting you to take the first step now: Learn more about how you can prepare for extreme weather today.

You Can Make a Difference
When Hurricane Helene hit, 8-year-old Grant saw firsthand the devastation it caused in his community in Greenville, South Carolina. His birthday was just a few weeks later, and instead of celebrating with presents, he decided to dedicate his special day to raising funds for the American Red Cross to help those affected by the disaster.
Grant presented a check for over $2,100 to his local Red Cross office. His act of kindness reminds us that no matter our age, we can all make a difference. Like Grant, you can provide hope and comfort for families impacted by disasters big and small - take the first step by starting a fundraiser today.
Spring into Action!
Become a Volunteer.
The season of growth is upon us! As we head into spring, the American Red Cross is working with communities across the nation to “grow” our volunteer numbers to prepare for the active summer months when hurricanes and wildfires can be more common. As the Red Cross continues to respond to more intense disasters and sees a constant demand for blood products, the need for people to raise their hand to support their community increases. Join your neighbors in becoming a trained volunteer to support communities impacted by severe weather.
Become a Champion with a Monthly Donation
We are inviting you to join a special group of supporters we call Red Cross Champions! When you give a monthly gift, your charitable giving is at work around the clock helping the Red Cross prepare and respond at a moment’s notice - no further action required.
"My story is simple. As I see and hear of disasters near and far, I also see the Red Cross there as well. It is a joy to be able to help through a modest monthly contribution. Thank you, Red Cross, for all you do!" - Yvonne, Red Cross Champion

How a Stranger Saved My Mother’s Life
"As a blood donor for over 40 years, the process has always provided a warm sense of giving back. I knew that each of my donations would eventually help save lives."
Dawn, a blood donor and Georgia Red Cross board member shared the story of how someone else’s blood donation saved her 86-year-old mother who was battling a severe infection. Over the next two months, her mother received four units of blood which gave her the strength to survive two surgeries and two courses of intravenous antibiotics.
Thanks to selfless blood donors, Dawn’s mother was able to return home, and most importantly, she was able to meet and hold her first great-grandchild during the holidays. Learn more about Dawn and how a stranger helped save her mother’s life.
