Classics Concerts
An Early Grave
October 28, 2023 | 8:00 PM
Bailey Performance Center
BIZET: Carmen Suite 1 & 2
GRIFFES: The Pleasure Dome of the Kubla Khan
MENDELSSOHN: Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich (dona nobis pacem)
BOULANGER, LILI: Pour les funérailles d'un soldat
Vieille prière bouddhique (Old Buddhist Prayer)
Things take an eclectic turn with the GSO’s opening performance of the season. The music of four composers who failed to reach the age of forty sets the scene and asks the question: How would their music have developed had they not each met an untimely, and early death.
Mozart & Brahms
February 24, 2024 | 8:00 PM
Bailey Performance Center
MASON: Immerse
MOZART: Clarinet Concerto
BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2
Mozart’s sublime Concerto for Clarinet and the second symphony of Brahms create an evening of music sure to please.
Quin Mason describes his piece Immerse as “a study in texture and the blending/timbral qualities.” Although a younger composer, Mason’s music has already been performed by many major orchestras. The GSO is proud to continue our commitment to introducing audiences to new voices.
When compared to string instruments, the clarinet was a fairly young and recent addition to the orchestra in Mozart’s time. Completely taken by its unique characteristics. Mozart composed his clarinet concerto for his friend and virtuoso Anton Stadler. Stepping into the role of the soloist is GSO principal clarinet, Justin Stanley.
The public had waited for nearly 20 years to hear the first symphony of Johannes Brahms. And after its successful premiere, his second took only four months to compose. Brahms’ second symphony is quintessential in terms of tone, style, and characteristics of the composer.
