Capture Cape Cod Through the Arts: Pottery

Visit most any town on the Cape and you're bound to run into a pottery shop. From everyday houseware to decorative pieces to larger, outdoor sculptures, there's an array of expertise, talent, and artistry to be found in this section of Massachusetts.

At many shops, you can watch ceramic artists in action, molding a piece of clay and other ceramic material into something beautiful. A number of potters on the Cape learned under famed artist Harry Holl who established Scargo Pottery & Art Gallery in Dennis in 1952, becoming the region's best-known potter who influenced a number of potters still practicing to this day.

That includes his daughter Sarah, Steven Kemp of Kemp Pottery, and Kevin Nolan of Barnstable Pottery, all featured in this video. For more info on some of the region's potters, visit Cape Cod Potters.

Not only can you visit pottery shops on Cape Cod, you can take classes to learn the trade. Classes are available at a number of these studios as well as at Cotuit Center for the Arts, Falmouth Art CenterTruro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, and more.
