Panel Highlight
How Artists Build Equitable, Empathetic Communities
Rebecca McGee Tuck is a fiber artist, a sculptor and an ocean activist. Her work is a visual narrative of what she accumulates from a throw away society and as a result she gives new life to what others discard.
Most recently Tuck has just returned from the Cuttyhunk Island Residency and is spending this year as a guest artist at UMass Dartmouth organizing the making of a massive collaborative art/activism piece to be created with over 300,000 collected miniature liquor bottles. Her series of work called “Along the Wrack Line” deals with the overwhelming amount of debris and plastic trash that contaminate our local New England beaches.
Artists play a significant role in creating equitable and empathetic communities by using their creative talents to challenge norms, inspire empathy, foster dialogue, and create spaces for diverse voices to be heard. Their work helps bridge gaps, break down barriers, and promote a sense of unity among community members. The goal for this session is to inspire by learning what’s happening in the arts sector now and how we can support artists and arts leaders in the future.
Joining Rebecca: Mark Adams, AFCC Artist of the Year; Rebecca McGee Tuck, Fiber artist and ocean activist; Ellice Patterson, Abilities Dance Boston
Moderator: Emily Ruddock, MASS Creative
