Carter’s H.R. 1161 to change the name of Greenland to “Red, White, and Blueland”

On Feb 10th, U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter introduced H.R. 1161, a bill to authorize President Trump to enter into negotiations to acquire Greenland and rename the territory “Red, White, and Blueland.”

Carter, whose Congressional district spans Georgia’s entire Atlantic coastline including the port cities of Savannah and Brunswick, introduced his legislation as both communities brace for the negative impacts to their local economies due to Trump’s unilaterally-imposed tariffs. Economists warn the consequences of Trump’s tariffs will be felt most by those who can least afford it. “The sad thing is with these tariffs, they could really affect your lower, lower-middle, and middle-class families,” said Georgia economics expert Thomas Fellows.

“To characterize Buddy Carter’s legislation to acquire Greenland and rename it ‘Red, White, and Blueland’ as a joke would be redundant,” said DPG spokesman Dave Hoffman. “Buddy Carter could have demonstrated real leadership for his district and vocally opposed the Trump tariffs, but he’d rather use his Congressional office to crack geopolitical jokes.”

Carter’s Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025 currently has no co-sponsors, dim prospects of passing, and even dimmer prospects still of actually acquiring the territory, which is not for sale. The bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to update federal paperwork to reflect the new name, giving the government a six-month deadline to complete that task.
