Bakersfield, CA - Norman Farrell Brown, a local author who learned how to read at the age of 47, will speak at Beale Memorial Library. The event is FREE, open to the public, and is a great opportunity to hear from a remarkable individual who overcame incredible odds to achieve his dreams.

After struggling with reading and writing for much of his life, Brown finally learned how to read with the help of a tutor from the Kern Literacy Council. Since then, he has written a book about his journey and inspires others to never give up on their dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem.

In his book, Still Moving On, Brown shares his life story and personal journey to read and how it has positively affected his life. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and get a chance to receive a signed copy of his book.

"We are thrilled to have Norman Farrell Brown speak at our library," said Andie Sullivan, Director of Libraries. "His story is truly inspirational and hope it will inspire others to overcome their own reading and writing challenges. The Library encourages residents to attend the Author Talk and meet Norman Farrell Brown, a true literacy hero."

The Author Talk Event is possible through a partnership with Kern Literacy Council. Kern Literacy Council was established in 1966 and its mission is to empower individuals to improve the quality of their lives through literacy education. Kern County adult and children residents are able to receive free tutoring from one of 70 trained tutors in variety of subjects and programs both on-site and via Zoom.

The Kern County Library is committed to supporting literacy efforts in our 22 locations for readers of all ages and levels through books, programs, and digital resources. The Library is a valuable resource for individuals looking to support their reading development and learning journey.
