A Note from the Director

Dear Friends:

Summer is flying by and so is the "So You Think You Know Jax Music?" exhibit by the Jacksonville Historical Society! We were so honored to be the first host for this traveling exhibit as it makes its way around Northeast Florida. We have a rich musical history here and this exhibit will make you appreciate it EVEN more. Stop by this week to see it! We'll be wrapping it up on Sunday with an informal get-together where we hope to see and hear from a few of those who have helped make music history in our area!

August will have a special focus on books by local authors! Stay tuned as we work on crowd-sourcing a great new name for this type of program.

And, right around the corner is the 10th annual Beach Legends gala! This event WILL sell out, so please make sure to secure your ticket ASAP! This will be a great event as we celebrate not only our three exceptional honorees, but also reflect on the past ten years of the Beaches Museum!

"So You Think You Know Jax Music?" Exhibit

FINAL Weekend & Musician Meet & Greet

Join us for the final weekend of "So You Think You Know Jax Music?" -- an introduction to a future music exhibit at the Jacksonville History Center.

Hosted by the Beaches Museum, this exhibit provides visitors with a taste of what's in store at the Jacksonville History Center.

Sunday, August 6 is the final day for the exhibit at the Museum. Musicians and music industry professionals are invited to stop by for an informal meet & greet. If you can make it, please email Kate at [email protected]. All are welcome to stop by between 1-3 p.m. on Sunday!

"American Dream: Steps Towards Abstraction"

Friday, August 11, 6:00 p.m.

The community is welcome to join the artist, Museum members, supporters, and art patrons for a first look at "American Dream: Steps Toward Abstraction." Artwork will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Beaches Museum.

Caitlin Flynn has exhibited in galleries from Chile to New York, and now calls the Beaches her home. She draws inspiration from the Abstract Expressionist movement, Wolf Kahn, and the Bay Area Figurative Movement. In her most recent series, she reflects on the American Dream, starting with writing hundreds of words on the canvas, and painting over them playing with their visibility in the painting’s context. Join Caitlin for a journey through memory of daydream, fog, and the abstract in "American Dream: Steps Toward Abstraction."

Book Talk: Nat Glover

"Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff in the Deep South"

Thursday, August 24, 6:30 p.m.

"Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff in the Deep South" by Nat Glover is the powerful story of a young Black man born into a racist environment and deeply underprivileged circumstances who became the first Black sheriff of a major city in the Deep South since the Reconstruction era.

Join us for a book talk and signing on Thursday, August 24 at 6:30 p.m. The Book Mark will have books available for purchase.

Summertime Stories

Saturday, August 19, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Wrangle up the little ones and join the Beaches Museum on Saturday, August 19 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for Summertime Stories. Summertime Stories is a family-friendly event which will feature a host of local children’s book authors. They will be present to share their tales, sign books, and chit-chat with families! There will be book readings every half hour and complementary drinks and cookies.

The event is free and requires no pre-registration!

Did you know that regular admission to the Museum is FREE? In 2014, in an effort to spur interest and remove any barriers to access, Maxwell and Edna Dickinson stepped up to sponsor admission for a full year. Attendance more than doubled in that first year and this successful tradition has continued ever since!
