Behind the Hype: Rob Sand's Record Tells a Different Story

Government and Politics

May 20, 2025

DES MOINES - As Rob Sand kicks off his campaign with a week full of self-congratulatory videos and media puff pieces, Iowa GOP Chairman Jeff Kaufmann is cutting through the spin:

"Ivy League elitist Rob Sand is not the unicorn he wants D.C. reporters to believe. In 2022, he outspent his opponent 36:1-$1.8 million to $50,000-just to squeak by with fewer than 3,000 votes," said Kaufmann. "After four years as auditor, his support shrank: he dropped from 25 counties in 2018 to just 11 in 2022."

Of the $8 million Sand boasts about raising, $7 million came from his own wealthy family. While Rob buys the Democratic nomination, everyday Iowans are moving in the opposite direction and Democrats are bleeding voter registration across the state.

"Maybe Iowans are tired of the country cosplay. Maybe it's the Ivy League arrogance," said Kaufmann. "Either way, Rob Sand's massive ego can't hide the fact that the more Iowans get to know him, the more his support shrinks."
