From: New Hampshire Governor Kelly AyotteCONCORD, NH - Thanks to Governor Kelly Ayotte's leadership, a bell-to-bell ban on cell phones in schools is now reality in New Hampshire.
“As a mom, I’m incredibly grateful for Governor Ayotte’s leadership in getting this done. Taking phones out of the classroom helps our kids stay focused, boosts their mental health, and gives teachers a real chance to teach without distractions. This is a win for students, parents, and educators alike,” said Representative Melissa Litchfield of Brentwood. Rep. Litchfield was a lead sponsor on bell-to-bell legislation in the House.
Education leaders and child development experts have long warned about the negative effects of excessive screen time in schools. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics and social psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt links screen exposure to increased anxiety, depression, and sleep deprivation among teens. School districts that have implemented bell-to-bell bans report improved student engagement, fewer behavioral issues, and reduced cyberbullying.
Stevens High School in Claremont, which instituted a full-day phone ban in 2023, has seen strong results. School officials say students are more attentive in class, participate more in discussions, and are spending more time interacting with their peers.
