OUR IMPACT IN 2023

THANK YOU 2023 DONORS, MEMBERS, AND PARTICIPANTS!

Thank you to everyone who donated to Bike New York, contributed to our campaigns, and participated in our rides in 2023. Because of you, Bike New York was able to multiply its impact and capacity across New York City communities. Read on to learn more about the difference YOU made during the past year.

BIKE EDUCATION

DID YOU KNOW THAT BIKE NEW YORK OFFERS YEAR-ROUND BIKE PROGRAMMING AND EDUCATION?

Thanks to our amazing donors who helped fund our work in 2023 we were able to substantially increase our impact in the NYC community:

  • We increased the number of people we reached with direct classes and programs by 203%, reaching nearly 10,000 people in 2023.

  • We increased the number of classes and programs offered by 70%, from 250 classes and programs in 2022 to 425 in 2023.

  • New Bikes for the Bike Fleet: Our bike fleet staff assembled 70 new bikes for our Bike Education Centers, funded by a successful 2022 #GivingTuesday Fundraiser.

UPCOMING CLASSES

  • E-Bike 101 class is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24th from 6:00pm-7:30pm.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

BICYCLES FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS

Distribution of Bicycles for Asylum Seekers kicked off in January of 2023. Over 100 bicycles, helmets, locks, and lights were distributed to asylum seekers in coordination with the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, Trek, Unlimited Biking, Amazon, and partners in community-based organizations.  An additional 100 bikes, helmets, locks and lights will be distributed this month.

BIKE PATH

Bike Path, the second-chance workforce development program for individuals previously involved with the justice system, continued to grow in its third year. 46 people were hired after graduating the program in 2023, nearly twice the amount as previous years. Two out of the three cohorts received in-person interviews from Motivate recruiters, and two graduates from Bike Path successfully completed the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.

NYCHA YOUTH AMBASSADORS AND YOUTH RIDE SERIES

11 youth from across NYC’s NYCHA Developments were able to complete our weekend ride series in order to prepare for the TD Five Boro Bike Tour; introduced by the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP) & coordinated with the NYPD Housing Authority. These 11 young folks were also able to complete the Discover Hudson Valley ride!

HIP HIP HOORAY FOR OUR BIKE NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS!

Our Events and Bike Education Programs run on the strength of volunteer power! On December 6th, we were happy to thank over 100 volunteers at Pig Beach BBQ in Astoria, Queens. ADVOCACY

UPDATING BIKING INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS THE FIVE BOROS

The MTA’s Bike Access Plan’s December update demonstrated commitment to plans made a year ago when its Extending Transit’s Reach program was released.

Iterating on the 2021 passage of legislation requiring an MTA strategic bike plan - legislation initially developed by Bike New York, The MTA made an historic pivot towards making its bridges bike accessible and developing more and better bike parking at transit stations. Updates include:

  • Completion of bike path work on the Henry Hudson and Cross-Bay Veterans Memorial bridges in 2024.

  • Creation of a fully ramped, wide bicycle path on the Queens–Randall’s Island span of the Triborough Bridge, scheduled to open in 2028.

  • A fully ramped pathway along the northern side of the Triborough Bridge Manhattan span (though its opening relies on the city to make progress developing waterfront parkland north of 125th St.).

The MTA will launch a secure bike parking program in 2024, starting at commuter rail stations. The MTA and city have also made progress installing bike racks at local subway stations. There is a long way to go, but the work has begun!

Thanks to everyone in the Bike New York community that helped NYC win these historic changes. We are well on our way to a greener, cleaner New York City.
