Preserving California History in Borrego Springs

Dear Chamber of Commerce,

Some of our members noticed during one of our trips to Borrego Springs, we camp at the American Legion; that the San Gregorio historical monument was leaning over precariously and was likely going to fall over. Someone contacted the park and apparently they had no plan to preserve the monument.

If you are not familiar with our organization, we place historical monuments all over the western United States. Our Chapter is responsible for San Diego and Imperial counties and we have placed over 100 markers in the 60 years of our existence. Even though this site was not originally designated by us we have been repairing and refinishing ours and others in our area.

Last weekend our crew dug around the monument, pulled it back upright, poured a new more substantial footing around and under it and refinished the bronze plaque. I have attached before and after pictures. We thought you would be interested since your organization is listed on the plaque as contributing to its construction.

WEED PULLING EVENT

Weed Pulling - Thurs., Feb. 23 Can you help for a couple hours?

No experience necessary! Leader Pat Matthews will provide instruction. Meet at the ABDNHA parking lot on Thurs., Feb. 23, at 8 a.m. to help pull Sahara Mustard from one of the better local wildflower locations. We'll caravan to the location about 10 minutes away. Bring gloves, hat, and water. We need your help. The more hands, the better!
