Executive Director's Notes
By Fran?oise Rhodes
More rain, wind and visitors in search of wildflowers and metal sculptures, we even had a call about fireworks on the 4th of July in Borrego. Chamber volunteer Judy Lewis told them no fireworks in Borrego Springs and the person said “great, I’ll book a room now because I want to get away from all of that.”
My first thought, a new marketing angle!
We want to thank BSUSD’s Mark Stevens - Superintendent and Victoria Baay – Principal, for coming to our board of directors meeting and sharing with us the many options available to help students and even local interns working to become teachers and also offering their guidance for the scholarship program the Chamber is working on. They also said that Borrego Springs has a very caring and generous community, most of us know this, but it is always nice to hear.
I have sent the downed street sign info to the roadworks department, please keep me updated on the status, if fixed or not.
Finally we are looking for Chamber volunteers for the 23-24 season. Shifts can be either a standby position or one day a week for four hours. It’s a fun and friendly environment and you’ll meet so many interesting people. No training needed, we’ll show you the ropes. If interested call Fran?oise at 760-767-5555 or email [email protected]

Swainson Hawk by Alicia Wszelaki
The 2023 Borrego Valley Hawk Watch is still underway!
Each year, Swainson's Hawks migrate over 6000 miles from Argentina to their breeding grounds up north. Lucky for us, Borrego Springs is on their route! A dedicated team of volunteers ("citizen scientists") watch for hawks in the morning and again in the early evening at designated spots.
On the morning of March 12, more than 1000 hawks were spotted! Stay tuned to see what the final hawk counts when the Hawkwatch concludes in early April.

Did You Know?
Crowds at one Louisiana State University football game once cheered so loudly that it registered as an earthquake on a local seismograph. The game, which took place between LSU and Auburn University, took place in front of a crowd of 79,431 fans at LSU's Tiger Stadium. The crowd's reaction to the game's final pass registered as an earthquake by a seismograph located around 1,000 feet from the stadium and the game went down in LSU history as the "Earthquake Game."
