Executive Director's Notes

By Franoise Rhodes

The Final 4, can you believe it for San Diego State…….let’s keep sending the winning vibes their way!

The March Madness Mixer at the Palm Canyon Hotel & RV Resort was another success and we thank everyone for coming. Held in the Bighorn Burgers & Shakes Saloon and the large patio area, attendees dined on buffalo chicken wings, sliders, salad and veggies while watching basketball and winning raffle prizes, plus a few surprise drawings as well.  Thanks to Chamber member raffle donors, Anza Borrego Desert Natural History Association, Carlee’s, Arches at the Borrego Springs Resort, Borrego Outfitters, Borrego Pool Supply, Red Ocotillo/Coyote Steakhouse and the BSCCommerce.

I also want to thank a small group of locals who sent me damaged or missing sign locations throughout the valley. Here is an update from the Borrego Roads Department: Thanks for letting us know about the signs that were down and missing. We repaired the dead end sign on Montezuma Rd and the double arrow sign on Ocotillo Circle. The missing street name signs are on order, and we’ll get them up as soon as they come in.

I’m still working on trying to get more speed limit signs posted downtown on Palm Canyon, it seems like a free for all.

Very disappointing news about the SVP placement once again in Borrego Springs. My hope now is that Liberty Health is tired of the backlash from Borrego and that they move on until we can get these laws upheld and changed.

Enjoy the last week of March.

Many of the streets in Borrego Springs are named after the brands

(used on branding irons) of past ranches in the area.

Can you name this street?

Congratulations Paul Johnson
Street name: Lazy Ladder Road

(If there is more than one correct answer we'll draw a winner)

SVP Placement UPDATE!!!

From Sarah & Lee Rogers

We are disappointed to report that Judge Weathers issued his decision to allow the placement of Sexually Violent Predator Douglas Badger in the house on Zuni Trail.

Sexually Violent Predator Badger is slated to be transferred to the house on Zuni Trail in Borrego Springs in May. The house has known code violations which are not resolved and should render the property unsuitable until repairs are executed.

This is an example of why we will continue to press Liberty Healthcare and the State to find better housing solutions.

Please support the request by Senator Brian Jones for the Joint Legislative Audit Committee to approve an audit of the contract between the CA Department of State Hospitals and Liberty Healthcare. The link is provided below.

From Senator Jones:  Californians have had enough! A few weeks ago, I requested an audit of Liberty Healthcare to get to the bottom of their poor handling of SVP placements. Now, we’re announcing the bipartisan SAFE Act, which would require transparency in the SVP placement process, force state officials to own up to these decisions, and make public safety the highest priority. The SAFE Act would end the ‘Hide the Predator’ game DSH plays when releasing SVPs into communities.

The 2023 Borrego Valley Hawk Watch is still underway!

Each year, Swainson's Hawks migrate over 6000 miles from Argentina to their breeding grounds up north. Stay tuned to see what the final hawk counts when the Hawkwatch concludes in early April.

Did You Know?

There's a basketball court in the U.S. Supreme Court building.

"The Highest Court in the Land" is the name given to the basketball court that's located in the U.S. Supreme Court building. Located on the top floor (and therefore higher than any other court in the building, which is how it got its name), the former storage room was turned into an exercise area for courthouse workers in the 1940s before nets were eventually installed.
