A Celebration of Art, Culture and Stories that Connect Us
This year marks the sixth anniversary of ArtLit, our free community celebration of art and literature for all ages. Held in conjunction with our 2023 NEA Big Read, ArtLit features an afternoon of amazing art, activities, performances, family fun and all things Colombian as an extension of the year's NEA Big Read themes and book selections.
Artlit 2023 activities include:
-Carnaval parade, dance and music by Carnaval de Barranquilla
-Carnaval mask-making, chalk art and photography/art workshops
-Salsa dance and vallenatos (Colombian folk music) performances
-Spoken word by blueapple Poetry
-Appearances by costumed characters, including Encanto’s Mirabel Madrigal and Rosie from PBS’ Rosie Rules
-Soccer games and fun
-Video games and virtual reality
-Face painting, arts & crafts and storytime
-Free books and giveaways
AARLCC Exhibit Opening Reception

Celebrate and explore AARLCC’s newest exhibit, walls turned sideways are bridges: of necessity at a free opening reception that features refreshments and a meet-and-greet with exhibit curators Marie Vickles and william cordova.
walls turned sideways are bridges: of necessity focuses on the evolution of radical community activist movements of the late 1960s/early 1970s, including the Black Panther Party, The Young Lords Party, Brown Berets, the American Indian Movement and others. In addition to documentary photos, the exhibition includes ephemera in the form of foreign books, pamphlets, vintage buttons, pins, historical mainstream newspapers, flyers, t-shirts, vinyl records and posters.
