A Conversation with Revolutionary American Artist Emory Douglas

Hear Emory Douglas, the Black Panther Party’s Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture, discuss art as activism and share his experience on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement in this free presentation, held in conjunction with AARLCC’s walls turned sideways are bridges exhibit. Emory Douglas’ work has been included in numerous journals and magazines. Black Panther, The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas, a collection of his graphic artwork, was published in 2007.

Discover the images and materials of the activist movements of the 1960s and 1970s in this free exhibit, which is open during AARLCC’s regular service hours. The exhibition includes photos, books, pamphlets, vintage buttons, pins, historical mainstream newspapers, flyers, t-shirts, vinyl records and posters.

Turkish-born Nevin Sutlas is a retired neurologist who worked for over 30 years at Istanbul’s Bakirkoy Hospital and Research Center for Mental Disorders. The author of numerous books, Marvelous Silly Brain, is a collection of fascinating stories about her work with patients with neurological disorders.

Kintsugi: The Japanese Art of Golden Repair

Turn something broken into something beautiful! This workshop highlights the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which broken pottery is mended with lacquer that’s dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. Bring your own broken object to repair or use one of our own.
An Introduction to Japanese History, Art and Culture

Presented by Wendy Lo, Curator of Education for the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, this free presentation takes you on a cultural journey through Japan’s most important eras and the influential events that shaped the nation’s society, art and culture. Two attendees will win tickets to the Japanese Tea Ceremony taking place on July 19 at Pompano Beach Library.

No More Late Fines
Broward County Library no longer assesses any late fines for library books, DVDs and other materials returned after the due date. All existing late fines on cardholder accounts have been removed. Materials still have a due date and cardholders will be charged for lost or damaged items. Items are considered lost when they are 35 days past the due date.
