NEA Big Read 2023 Preview
NEA Big Read 2023 is a community-wide literary initiative that encourages everyone to read and discuss the year’s featured titles. Beginning in January, libraries throughout Broward County will host free events for all ages centered around the themes, ideas and perspectives of the featured books. Events include dance classes, art workshops, book talks, storytimes, performances, poetry and panel discussions. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, with additional sponsorship provided by the Broward Public Library Foundation.
2023 NEA Big Read Featured Titles
- Infinite Country? by Patricia Engel: In this novel about immigration and the harsh reality of undocumented life in America, a family is torn between their native Colombia and the United States.
- The Boy in the Back of the Class? by Onjali Q. Raúf (Ages 8-11) When Ahmet, a nine-year-old Syrian refugee, starts his new school in the United States, his new classmates band together to help reunite him with his loved ones back home.
- Dreamers by Yuyi Morales (Preschool-Grade 3) The author’s true story of leaving Mexico and her small child to find a new life in a foreign country.
January Book Clubs
The only thing (almost) better than reading books is talking about them! Find your fellow readers at one of our book clubs or discussions. We’ve got plenty to pick from – nonfiction, fiction, day, night, kids, adults – all free and waiting for you. This includes our Director’s Book Club! Chinese Language Classes for Children, Northwest Regional Library is hosting Chinese language classes - Beginner for ages 5-7 and Intermediate for ages 5-12 every Saturday beginning January 7, 2023. The two-hour classes start at 2PM; registration is required.
BCL Facebook Photo Album: Frozen in Time Opening Reception
On December 13, guests of all ages attended the opening reception for Frozen in Time: Selections from the Love-Thornell Collection of Black American Photographs at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. This exceptional collection of over 1,300 photographic images documents Black American life from the mid-19th and 20th centuries and will be on exhibit through January 4, 2023.
