South Florida Book Festival


WORD! Celebrating 50 Years of Hip-Hop Culture

Hear from nationally known speakers, explore the roots of hip-hop culture and meet local authors at the 2023 South Florida Book Festival. This year’s theme brings together literature and visual and performing arts, featuring leaders, authors and scholars of Florida's hip-hop community. Reserve today - space is limited for all sessions and expected to fill up fast!

South Florida Book Festival: Presenters & Participants

  • Kwame Alexander is a poet, educator, bestselling author and contributor to NPR's Morning Edition. He is also the executive producer, showrunner and writer of The Crossover TV series on Disney+, based on his Newbery Medal-winning novel of the same name. Details/ Free Tickets
     
  • Dr. Regina N. Bradley is the author of Chronicling Stankonia: The Rise of the Hip-Hop South, co-host of the Southern hip-hop podcast Bottom of the Map and an assistant professor of English and African Diaspora Studies at Kennesaw State University. Details/Free Tickets
     
  • DJ Demp has worked as a DJ since age 13. A member of legendary group Ghostown DJs, best known for their #1 record My Boo, he’s DJ’ed for entertainment giants such as Luke, Trick Daddy, Lil Flip, Trina and Juvenile. Details/Tickets
     
  • Girls Make Beats is nonprofit organization providing classes and workshops designed to help our community’s young people explore careers as music producers, DJs and audio engineers. Girls Make Beats was founded in 2012 by certified audio engineer, Tiffany "Delilah" Miranda.
     
  • Rob Kenner, author of The Marathon Don’t Stop: The Life and Times of Nipsey Hussle, is a founding editor of Vibe, a contributor to The Vibe History of Hip Hop, the co-author of VX: 10 Years of Vibe Photography and the producer/director of documentary shorts of De La Soul, Nas and Post Malone. Details/Free Tickets
     
  • The Museum of Graffiti in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood is the world’s first museum dedicated to preserving graffiti’s history and celebrating its emergence in design, fashion, advertising and galleries. It exhibits, educates and celebrates the artists who transform public spaces into vibrant masterpieces.
  • Olujimi Dance Collective includes dancers, performers, choreographers and storytellers. Their performance of T.W.E.R.K. (Transitional dance Works and practices that Evoke Revolutionary Kinship) is a healing celebration of the bonds that hold us together - and inspire empowerment and spirituality. Details/Free Tickets
