Ceasefire Agreement Marks Major Breakthrough

Government and Politics

January 15, 2025

Oklahoma City, OK - The Chairwoman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party acknowledges the significant breakthrough in the Middle East as Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal, brokered with the assistance of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. This development brings hope for an end to the devastating 15-month war that has reshaped the region.

"Relief fills the air as the Israel-Hamas ceasefire brings an end to 15 months of devastating conflict. This critical step allows the people of the region to pause, assess the immense damage, reunite with their loved ones, and begin the difficult but necessary journey of rebuilding their lives and communities. May this be the foundation for a plan for lasting peace."  said Chairwoman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, Alicia Andrews.

We extend our gratitude to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his leadership in proposing a forward-thinking plan to address the region’s long-term needs. Blinken’s proposal for a security force in Gaza, consisting of vetted Palestinian personnel and international contributors, aims to secure the flow of humanitarian aid, facilitate reconstruction, and build the foundation for an independent Palestinian state—an effort aligned with values of peace and justice. This plan envisions wealthy Middle Eastern nations financing the force and contributing troops, with its ultimate goal enshrined in a U.N. Security Council resolution.

Key elements of the agreement include:

  • Ceasefire and Aid: A temporary halt to hostilities, coupled with increased humanitarian aid to Gaza to address the critical needs of its people.
  • Hostage Exchange: The release of 33 Israeli hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.

As Secretary Blinken stated, “Reaching agreement will require all parties to summon the political will to make hard decisions. This agreement follows over a year of conflict that has caused immense loss on both sides.

According to reports:

  • More than 46,707 people in Gaza have been killed since October 2023, with the majority reported as women and children.
  • In Israel, 1,200 lives were lost in the October 2023 Hamas attack, with 405 soldiers killed in subsequent military operations.

While we welcome this step toward peace, we grieve for the lives lost and the suffering endured. As the ceasefire takes effect, we remain committed to supporting efforts for a sustainable and just resolution to the conflict.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the World Food Program for their unwavering commitment to delivering life-saving aid during this devastating conflict. We are proud that several of our county parties and Young Democrats chapters came together to raise funds in support of these vital efforts. Their work reminds us of the importance of compassion and the critical role humanitarian aid plays in times of crisis. As the region moves through this fragile transition, we must continue to advocate for and support these programs.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party stands for peace, humanitarian aid, and diplomacy as pathways to lasting solutions, and we commend the work of Secretary Blinken and the Biden Administration for their dedication to achieving peace in the Middle East.
