Atelier Classes — A Timeless Approach to Artistic Training

Arts Bonita’s Atelier Program is rooted in the classical academic tradition. It’s designed for artists who want to strengthen their skills through disciplined study of the human form, working directly from life. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned artist, this program offers a structured path to develop your eye, technique, and artistic voice. Drawing is emphasized first to ensure a solid foundation before transitioning into painting.

Monitored Long Pose Figure Study
Jul 21 - Aug 4 | 1:00PM – 4:00 PM

No instructor/monitor only – Work from life in this figure study class with the medium of your choice. Models are clothed or nude and hold one pose per class. Drop-ins welcome. Model fee is included in the cost of registration.

Classical Cast Drawing and Painting
Jul 21 - Aug 6 | 9:00AM – 12:00PM

Students new to this course will copy two dimensional drawings from the Charles Bargue Drawing Course before proceeding to copying plaster casts inspired by sculptures from classical antiquity. Returning students will continue drawing from the casts with increasingly more complex subjects with the option to progress to grisaille (monochrome) painting using a 9-step value scale. No live models.

Short Pose Figure Drawing
Jul 23 - Aug 6 | 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Explores the mechanics of drawing and how to establish a process that weeds out error and encourages a felt response to the model. Students will practice an effective method for drawing that abstracts and flattens the figure and focuses on the overall gestural characteristics. Concepts covered include comparative measuring techniques, plumb-lining, point-to-point drawing, enveloping, shape finding and mass drawing.

Open Life Drawing and Painting
Jul 24 - Aug 7 | 6:30–8:30 PM

Bring your preferred media and draw or paint from the live model in this 2-hour long session. Models will pose for portrait, figure and/or in whimsical costume. No previous art experience required. We provide the inspiration, drawing boards and easels!

Extended Long Pose Figure Study
Jul 25 - Aug 8 | 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

Prerequisite Short Pose Figure Drawing Recommended. Extended pose time with a live, undraped model that bridges the rudimentary scaffold of the block-in with a refined understanding of form through the marriage of value and line. Concepts covered include the block-in, superficial anatomy, value organization, and a theory of light.
