From: Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco60 Years Strong
Rooted in Rebellion & Resistance
As Bay Area immigrant communities face continuous attacks, we remain grounded in what’s defined us for the past six decades: collective power, radical creativity, and resistance.
In 1965, when the Chinese Culture Center (CCC) was founded, the Civil Rights Act had just been passed and long-standing immigration quotas rooted in exclusionary, racist policy were finally lifted. At the same time, Chinatown was under threat from rapid real estate development and gentrification. Community leaders and members pushed back against these forces, advocating for a community cultural space, leading to the founding of the CCC.
Since the beginning, CCC has been in solidarity with and rooted firmly in immigrant communities, proving that art and culture are forces for justice, belonging, and transformation. In a time of increased threats and fear-mongering from the federal government, we are committed to creating safe spaces for all and uplifting freedom, democracy, and to celebrate our diverse communities.
As we mark this 60th anniversary, we honor Chinatown’s enduring spirit, a community that continues to fight for our nation’s diversity and identity, and stands in solidarity with all immigrant communities. We invite you to join us in sharing a message of hope and unity.

A New Era of Courage
“In many ways, the story of CCC mirrors that of modern Chinatown: born against the odds and sustained by ingenuity and deep community care. Over the past six decades, the organization has faced economic pressures, political rifts and waves of cultural change. But CCC has emerged each time with a renewed sense of purpose and activism.”
