From: City Of AthensJob Summary: This position conducts Magistrate hearings and provides clerical support for office operations.
Major Duties: Accepts payments via telephone, by mail, or online; monitors online system to record payments in a timely manner. Assists with court sessions; calls defendants forward; records Judge’s actions; prepares related paperwork. Issues warrants for failure to appear and failure to pay; issues witness subpoenas for trial dockets. Maintains court files and records. Enters adjudications, new court dates, case notes, etc. Reviews police reports and complainants’ depositions to determine sufficient cause for a warrant to be issued; processes related paperwork. Conducts hearings for all domestic violence arrests and places conditions on release. Swears to traffic tickets, DUI arrests, and misdemeanor non-traffic arrests. Processes monitions, requests, and paperwork filed by attorneys. Prepares and reviews court dockets for court proceedings. Serves as custodian of court records; ensures cases are filed properly; provides copies upon request. Reviews jail rosters daily. Approves appearance and appeal bonds. Maintains list of those with protection orders/elder protection from abuse orders. Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications: 18 year or older. High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Completion of the Magistrate’s Certification Program.
Knowledge Required By The Position: Knowledge of Municipal Court policies, procedures, and guidelines. Knowledge of ACJIC guidelines. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs. Skill in the provision of customer services. Skill in problem solving. Skill in prioritizing and planning. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.
Physical Demands/ Work Environment: The work consists of related magistrate and administrative duties. Strict guidelines and the unique nature of each case contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to perform the duties of a Magistrate and to provide support for the day-to-day operations of the Municipal Court. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of court operations.
