Be prepared for the potential for severe weather this afternoon and evening! Review your plan, stay alert, and seek shelter if a warning is issued for your area. To properly shelter in the event of a tornado, move to an interior room with no windows on the lowest level of your home.

The City of Coppell’s Emergency Management division encourages residents to utilize at least three different methods for receiving emergency alerts, such as signing up for NotifyCoppell, downloading an app, and purchasing a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio.

Residents can also receive the most up-to-date weather updates in DFW by following the National Weather Service on the NWS’s Twitter page.

Refuse Rates Correction

The City of Coppell has been made aware that some residents may have received outdated refuse collection rate information in the newsletter mailed along with their utility bill. On January 1, 2023, refuse rates increased slightly per the City’s contract with Republic Services. The correct monthly refuse rate for residential customers is $18.77 plus $1.55 in sales tax and a $0.10 public education fee. The current refuse rate for residents who receive the senior discount is $16.89 per month, plus $1.39 in sales tax and a $0.10 public education fee.

DFW Airport West Flow Conditions

The City of Coppell has been notified by DFW Airport that due to strong winds forecasted this evening, Thursday, March 2 through midday tomorrow, March 3, the airport may experience a change in aircraft operations, which may increase air traffic and noise over Coppell.

DFW airport’s primary runways are oriented north/south, but many aircraft cannot use the north/south runways when there are strong west crosswinds. The east and west diagonal runways may be needed for arrivals and departures and will remain open overnight to accommodate aircraft during the high winds.

Some runways that were previously closed for rehabilitation work will reopen during the high winds for additional aircraft support. Scheduled maintenance on these runways is expected to resume sometime Friday, but the interruption in construction may delay the reopening originally scheduled for Monday, March 6.

Utility Billing to Close at Noon on March 24

The City of Coppell’s Strategic Financial Engagement Department, including Utility Billing, will close at noon on Friday, March 24 for professional staff development. Utility payments should be made at the window prior to noon on March 24, or by utilizing one of the several other payment options available.

Test Your Home Smoke Alarms

The Coppell Fire Department and Life Safety Park want to remind you to test your home smoke alarms each month. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke and fire spread fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.

- Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
- Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
- Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.
- Teach family members that when a smoke alarm sounds, go outside and stay outside.
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Sleep with bedroom doors closed, and close doors behind you in the event of an evacuation.

Through hands-on explorations and outdoor adventures, learners gain the knowledge and skills to become lovers of nature and responsible stewards of the environment. A different learning theme is offered each month during the school year. Sign up for each theme according to your interest and/or availability. Participants should bring a water bottle and wear protective clothing for outdoor activity. Geocache Treasure Hunt
March 14 | 1 – 3 pm

Join the BEC for a family-friendly, high-tech treasure hunt! Discover how to utilize GPS on your personal mobile device to locate hidden treasures throughout the trails of Coppell Nature Park. A series of GPS coordinates will lead you to each prize! Registration is required for each child participant, and children must be accompanied by an adult. An email with details and instructions will be sent upon registration. For ages 7 – 18.

FCNP Introduction to the Night Sky
March 25 | 10 am – Noon

Join the Coppell High School Astronomy Club students and learn fun facts about the night sky. The students have designed this presentation and are excited to teach others about the wondrous sky. This program is hosted by the Friends of Coppell Nature Park FREE of charge. Registration is required for each participant.

Budding Curiosity: Sunflowers
March 27 | 10 – 11 am

Join the BEC staff for an education program that builds on a sense of wonder, inviting youth to explore nature and the world around them. Through activities and crafts, this program reinforces a foundation for developing positive impressions about nature. Adults are encouraged to actively participate with their children and enjoy learning together. Registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For ages 3 – 5.

Library Playdate

Visit the library for some special playtime with your child, and a chance to interact casually with other local parents. Pickleball at The Core

Exciting news! The Core is now offering recreational open play pickleball from 9 - 11 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

A CORE membership or day pass will be required in order to participate. The courts are not regulation size or surface as they are intended for recreational play.

The Re-emergence of UFOs

Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) are once again making headlines with the U.S. Government formally investigating recent sightings. Discover why a once ridiculed topic is now being taken seriously. This lecture will explore the most compelling UFO cases, identify where the social stigma came from, and see what revelations may emerge in the upcoming years via new government reports, scientific studies, and even a United Nations UFO conference.

Neil Pinto is an independent researcher on the UFO/UAP topic with a master's degree in systems engineering from the University of Denver and a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Program Manager at Lockheed Martin with over 15 years of experience.

Senior Water and Sewer Discount

Are you at least 65 years old? Then you qualify for a 10% discount on your water bill! Senior citizens must provide a copy of their driver’s license or other form of identification listing their birth date to the Utility Billing department at [email protected].
