From: City of Delray BeachDelray Beach Passes Green Building Ordinance to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The City of Delray Beach recently passed a Green Building Ordinance, which takes effect on November 1, 2023, giving the development community time to make necessary adjustments for compliance. "We believe the new Green Building Ordinance will provide lasting benefits for our residents and stakeholders and greatly improve their quality of life," Delray Beach City Manager Terrance Moore said. "Green buildings operate more efficiently, save owners money, and provide a healthier indoor environment.”
The ordinance applies to all buildings of 15,000 square feet or larger in Delray Beach, including City buildings. Developers applying for a building permit will need certification from one of the four certification programs, Florida Green Building Coalition, National Green Building Standard, Green Globes, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. All four programs promote buildings that operate more efficiently, saving the owner money while reducing carbon emissions and providing a healthier indoor environment.
The results of a recently completed greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory indicate that buildings are responsible for 41% of the GHG emissions generated. The largest source of GHG is transportation, which is responsible for 52% of emissions. The Green Building Ordinance will increase the number of green buildings in Delray Beach and address the sources of GHG emissions within the City.
