City Of Gaithersburg : Valentine-Themed One-Acts, Sweethearts And The Zoo Take Center Stage at Arts Barn

Gaithersburg, MD – (February 1, 2023) In partnership with Victorian Lyric Opera Company, Gaithersburg Arts on the Green presents Sweethearts by W. S. Gilbert and The Zoo by Arthur Sullivan. The show runs February 10 through 26, 2023, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The Arts Barn is located at 311 Kent Square Road. Tickets are $24, $20 for students ages 15 to 21, and $15 for youth ages 14 and under. This show is recommended for ages 12 and older. Purchase tickets online here.

Act I is Sweethearts, a comic play billed as a "dramatic contrast" in two short acts that tells a sentimental and ironic story of the differing recollections of a man and a woman about their last meeting together before being separated and reunited after 30 years.

Act II, The Zoo, is a farcical story that concerns two pairs of lovers. First, a nobleman who goes to the zoo to woo the girl who sells snacks there. He tries to impress her by buying and eating all of the food. The other couple includes a young chemist who believes that he has poisoned his beloved by mixing up her father's prescription with peppermint that he had meant for her.

Since 1978, Victorian Lyric Opera Company (VLOC) has charmed audiences across the Greater DC region with productions of traditional light-opera. The company specializes in the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, and also performs both lesser known works of the Victorian era and more contemporary fare.
