CWD to resume service with Friday collections

As a reminder, CWD is not collecting trash or recycling today out of an abundance of caution.

Service for customers on the Monday/Thursday trash schedule — and recycling for Monday-Thursday customers — will resume the week of Feb. 6.

Customers who normally have trash or recycling collected on Friday should place their items out Friday morning. CWD expects collections to take longer than normal thanks to recovering roads and pent-up volume, so we anticipate that Friday collections will extend into Saturday, Feb. 4; Friday customers should leave their bins curbside if their street has not yet received service.

Thank you for your patience and understanding this week!

Traffic Alert: Keller-Haslet Railroad Crossing Rescheduled

Due to this week's winter weather, the contractor working on behalf of Union Pacific rescheduled the planned maintenance closure of the Keller-Haslet Road crossing closed to Tuesday, Feb. 7.

They expect this to be a one-day closure, with work starting around 7 a.m. and wrapping up by 4 p.m. Area commuters should anticipate congestion and plan ahead to use alternate routes.

February Night Hike set for Monday

If you’re feeling a little cooped up and need to stretch your legs, join us for an hour-long Night Hike through Bear Creek Park next week!

The trail is paved, so feel free to bring your strollers and leashed pets. Since it will be dark, it wouldn’t hurt to wear bright clothing and bring a flashlight. The trek starts at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at 400 Bear Creek Park Road. We hope to see you there!

Coming Soon: The Social Brush

Kids may be Artful Mayhem owner Michelle Dedwylder’s “everything,” but after decades of running a private school and teaching art to children through her popular Old Town Keller business, her latest business venture will serve a new group of creative minds.

“I have made relationships with so many parents over the years, and they’ve always said, ‘when are you going to do something for adults?’” she said. Now, they’re getting their wish.

The Social Brush will open this spring at 139 Taylor Street in Old Town, just around the corner from Artful Mayhem. The new space will offer BYOB “paint and sip” events and arts and crafts classes for students 16 and older. From watercolor, portrait painting and special acrylic techniques to crocheting, knitting and more, the possibilities are endless. She and her teachers are looking forward to themed nights of fun, hosting a wide variety of parties and team-building events, and generally letting the artistic abilities of Keller-area residents run wild.

“We all need our creative outlet — whether we’re artistic or not,” Dedwylder said. “This is about friends, fellowship, networking, self-care and having fun; if there’s an event I can create, I’m going to do it.”

Plans for the new business also include a small gallery where local artists can sell their work and using the space for birthday parties and summer camps that outgrow Artful Mayhem’s smaller footprint. Dedwylder is also contemplating a monthly membership option offering fellow adults with “arts and crafts in their blood” to make The Social Brush their artistic home.

“My goal was at five years of owning Artful Mayhem to do something — either expand or start something new — so when my landlord told me she didn’t have anyone going into one of their buildings opening up, I immediately said, ‘I want it,’” she said. “It’s been seamless; everything has worked out perfectly, and when I mention my plans to the parents, they’ve all said, ‘just tell me when to sign up!’”

Interviews are starting this month for local artists and crafters interested in teaching at The Social Brush, and Dedwylder plans to open her doors this spring.

January's Spice Club meeting moved to next week

Give your dishes a kick when you share spices, recipes, and ideas in the Keller Spice of the Month Club. Thanks to this week's winter weather, you can get a double dose of fun in February.

Join us for some delicious conversation for the rescheduled January session on Tuesday, Feb. 7 — and normally on the last Tuesday of every month — at 6 p.m. at the Keller Public Library, 640 Johnson Road.

How does it work? Club members can pick up a sample packet of each month's spice along with recipes featuring that flavor and a little spicy history any time during the month; the last-Tuesday meetings are for sharing your favorite recipes (and some food if you're inclined to bring samples)! January's featured spice, which will be discussed at the rescheduled session next week, was cinnamon.

You must be 18 or older to join this free club, but visitors are always welcome. Sign up to join the recipe and reminder mailing list at  bit.ly/KPLSpiceMail.
