On February 7, 2023 the City Council approved a resolution proclaiming termination of the City of Lomita's local emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Effective February 28, 2023 the city will resume pre-pandemic operations to coincide with the State of California.

Kaia South Bay Officially Opens

On February 2, current and former City Council Members, Commissioners, staff and the Chamber of Commerce joined the Picerne Group team to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Kaia South Bay Apartments, a 220-residence community at 2457 Lomita Blvd. 

Officials were treated to a tour of the beautiful facility. On-site amenities include a courtyard swimming pool, a club room, and a fitness center. 

The site was a former equipment storage yard and Picerne worked closely with the City of Lomita to understand the needs of its citizens and design a world-class residence. 

City Commissioners Recognized
with "Team Lomita" Jerseys

During their February 7 meeting, the City Council presented members of the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, and Public Safety and Traffic Commission with personalized Lomita jerseys as a sign of appreciation for their service to the community. 

Serving on a board or commission is a voluntary public service. These community based commissions play a vital role in advising the City Council on matters specific to each commission.

Another Successful Catalytic Converter Etch and Catch Event

Due to popular demand, the City of Lomita partnered with the Lomita Sheriff Station, Van Lingen Group, and the Task Force for Regional Auto Theft Prevention (TRAP) to host another Etch and Catch event on January 28 at City Hall. Vehicles began lining up before the event even started!

While etching may not prevent your catalytic converter from being stolen, it does provide law enforcement with valuable information should it be stolen and recovered during subsequent investigations.

Lomita Farmers Market's New Schedule

Moving forward, the Lomita Farmers Market will now take place on the last Sunday of the month from 10am-2pm at Lomita City Hall. You know, Sunday Funday!

The next market is taking place February 26!

Trash and Recycling Curbside Collection Guidelines - CLARIFICATION

In our last e-newsletter we included information about the city's regulations when it comes to residential collection of waste and recycling. 

To clarify, the trash, recycling, and organics receptacles may be placed curbside as early as 4 p.m. the day before your regular collection day but must be removed no later than 8:00 a.m. the day after collection.

New Planning Employees Join Team Lomita

The City of Lomita is proud to welcome two new employees to assist the public with it's planning needs!

Erika Barbero is the new Assistant Planner. Prior to becoming an Urban Planner, she worked as an educator and academic advisor in Los Angeles for 4.5 years. Erika earned her Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of California, Irvine in 2021. Her interests include data analysis, geospatial mapping, and housing policy. Erika’s contributions to the planning profession include workforce development research, policy advocacy, and public sector planning. She also holds a bachelor's degree from UCLA in Chicano/a Studies and Urban and Regional Studies. Erika currently lives in Long Beach with her partner and their dog.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah and Redlands, California, Whitney Weisberg recently joined Lomita as a Planning Intern. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Fordham University in New York City. During her time at Fordham, she engaged in various federal and local public service internships with Congressman Scott Peters in San Diego, California and former City Council Member Ritchie Torres in the Bronx, New York. Upon graduating from her bachelor’s degree, Whitney joined the Teach For America program, instructing high school students as a full-time educator in the Bronx, New York while completing her Master of Arts in Teaching at Relay Graduate School of Education. Whitney is currently enrolled at University of Southern California and pursuing her Master of Urban Planning degree.

What is brush clearance and why is it important? 

The County of Los Angeles Fire Department will be conducting annual brush clearance inspections within the next few months. Thousands of homes are in danger of destruction by fire because of their proximity to brush-covered areas. Homes with wood shake roofs, wood siding, decks, patio covers, or exposed eaves are particularly vulnerable to the spread of fire. Despite efforts from firefighters, wildland fires fanned by strong winds can destroy homes. It is your legal responsibility to take the necessary action by clearing vegetation around all structures at risk. A fire safe landscape creates a defensible space to help protect against approaching wildfires.

Districting Changes Coming to Lomita
The City of Lomita is considering the transition to district-based elections, and it's not too late to get involved. The city has announced dates for the remainder of the process of considering districts, and residents now have even more time to draw and submit draft maps with an updated submission deadline of February 28th.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming deadlines and meetings:

February 28, 2023 - Deadline to submit maps at third hearing

March 18, 2023 - Community Workshop

March 21, 2023 - Third public hearing

April 4, 2023 - Final deadline to submit maps

April 18, 2023 - Fourth public hearing to select map

May 2, 2023 - Second reading of ordinance
