Government and Politics
January 23, 2023
From: City of MiamiDear Residents,
Happy New Year! I hope 2023 has brought you blessings and a new beginning thus far. As Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, I am pleased to present the Winter edition of the Chamber Gazette. In the new year, I will work on policies with my colleagues that will help improve and empower the lives of the nearly 3 million Residents in Miami-Dade County.
This year I am looking forward to advancing my top legislative priorities to include implementing mass transit solutions and land use policies that improve mobility while also increasing our housing supply. Expansion of the Rapid Transit Zone is one way to do this. I will continue to urge the Florida Department of Transportation to designate the North Corridor of the SMART Plan as part of the State’s Strategic Intermodal System.
Modernizing County procedures is a matter of great importance. It will encourage businesses to create innovative solutions that yield positive social outcomes like Urban Air Mobility. These strategies will aim to solve our current and future passenger and cargo issues.
Additionally, we must develop Miami-Dade County as an environmentally resilient place to live through infrastructure improvements like converting septic to sewer. County approaches such as Connect 2 Protect will ensure the health of residents in at-risk neighborhoods and protect our natural resources.
Overall, these legislative aims will help move Miami-Dade County forward and make us a world-class community. As we progress through this year, my colleagues and I will continue to work hard to make Miami-Dade County the best place for our residents to work, live and play.
Sincerely,
Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III

Priorities for 2023
My main priorities are small businesses, workforce and affordable housing, and traffic.
It is no secret that our homes have become unaffordable. We must keep up with the demand and find ways to make housing attainable, so our workforce can continue to grow and thrive.
As we often hear, the backbone of our community, and frankly our country, is our small businesses. We must incentivize small businesses to continue operating and, in other cases, incentivize new businesses to open – not create burdensome policies that make it nearly impossible for a small business to succeed.
