Peachtree City Wins Award for Financial Reporting

Peachtree City once again won the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

This continues a winning streak that goes back decades.

The award, handed out by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. It recognizes cities that go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles according to GFOA.

GFOA lauded Peachtree City for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2021, noting that the report met an impartial panel's high standards of transparency and full disclosure.

Assistant City Manager Justin Strickland
Selected for 2023 Young Gamechangers Program

GeorgiaForward recently selected Assistant City Manager Justin Strickland as one of the 45 promising professionals to serve the organization’s 2023 Young Gamechangers (YG) program.

YG is a unique leadership action program hosted by GeorgiaForward, a non-profit organization administrated by the Georgia Municipal Association. Young Gamechangers brings professionals from across the state to work on the persistent challenges of one Georgia community.

In 2023, Columbus-Muscogee County will host the Young Gamechangers. Columbus leaders have finalized their four “Challenge Questions” that the 2023 cohort will be charged to answer through the eight months they will spend developing specific, actionable recommendations for the community. These questions focus on economic development, community engagement, local entrepreneurship, and more.

“I am so excited to work with such a diverse group of accomplished, creative and hard-working Georgians and create a positive impact on Columbus-Muscogee County,” Strickland said. “I can’t wait to meet my fellow Gamechangers in April.”

GeorgiaForward engages young professionals with leaders in civics, industry, government, academia, and the media to find a common vision for Georgia. They accomplish this by creating an environment in which vision and pragmatism can overcome political deadlock, fostering communication and goodwill among Georgia’s stakeholders, and seeking innovative solutions to Georgia’s biggest challenges.

AARP Audit Identifies Improvements for Making Multi-Use Paths More Walkable

An AARP audit of Peachtree City's multi-use path system highlighted areas where the trails could promote more walkability by residents.

Keith Larson, a community advocate with Bike-Walk Fayette, started the audit due to his vision to create "an active community fully connected by pedestrian networks" that allows all people equitable access to active recreation and alternative modes of transportation.

“I am seeking to learn appropriate planning benchmarks and tools to elevate the status of pedestrians in a community known mostly for the extensive 100+ mile multi-use path system and golf carts," Larson said in the January 31st AARP publication, "Stories from the State Walking College: An Idea Book for Taking Action to Create More Walkable Communities."

Larson's unique perspective and familiarity with the different traffic found on Peachtree City's multi-use paths helped AARP expand its walk audit tool kit. Now the organization has alternative worksheets for multi-use paths and trails that can be used when auditing a community's walkability.

Keith is currently in the process of identifying and marking ADA-accessible routes at six Peachtree City parks and nature areas. Southside Support Inc., and other numerous volunteers, are assisting Keith with the initiative.

The project, which is receiving funding from AARP, has already been formally approved by the City Council.

Sign up for Citizen Police Academy

How do cops do their job?

The Peachtree City Police Department aims to answer that question at its annual citizens' police academy.

Now in its 21st year, the citizens' police academy teaches residents how crime scenes are processed, how traffic laws are enforced, and how officers take a suspect into custody while protecting themselves and others from harm.

The 10-week course also includes a ride-along with an officer and a tour of the 911 communications center.

Applications for the citizens' police academy are now being accepted. Participants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check.
