I found this article, published in the Houston Post on Jan 24, 1924, about the building of a new Brazos River bridge. Here is a little history about crossing the Brazos in Richmond. A ferry was in operation until 1887 in the vicinity of the river bridges we have today. A used bridge, which had collapsed, was given to Richmond by Waller County. This bridge was in use until Aug 03, 1893, when it collapsed from the weight of a very large herd of cattle crossing it. In 1894, a new bridge was erected. A flood in Dec 1913 washed away the east and west approach to this bridge which was repaired. In spring of 1922 another flood caused the center portion of the bridge to collapse which brought back the use of a ferry.

A new bridge was opened on July 23, 1925. This bridge was the 1st highway bridge in the state to use the pneumatic (compressed gas) method of pier construction. The piers were 119 ft from top to bottom and extended 30 ft. below sea level. These piers were also the highest masonry piers constructed in Texas at the time. This bridge was a significate Old Spanish Trail or Hwy 3 (now Hwy 90A) connection between Houston and San Antonio that was viewed as one of the most heavily traveled throughfares in Texas. In 1965, a parallel bridge for west bound traffic was built leaving the 1925 bridge for eastbound traffic. During Nov. 1986, the 1925 bridge was closed as it was found unsafe for vehicles. At that time, the 1965 bridge was then used for both east and west bound traffic. On Jul 14, 1988, the 1925 bridge was demolished to make way for a new east bound bridge which we still have today.

Richmond, I hope you enjoy the history I like to share about the city I love so very much!!
