City Of Richmond: Mayor Becky Haas Weekly Message Speaks Abouttexas Revolution History

Government and Politics

From: City of Richmond

This past Monday, March 6th, was an important date in Texas Revolution history. In 1836, it was the day that the Battle of the Alamo ended.  The Battle of Gonzales, fought on Oct 2, 1835, was the first miliary engagement of the Texas Revolution. This battle stemmed around a borrowed cannon. The Texians borrowed this cannon from the Mexicans to protect themselves from Indian raids. The Mexicans lent the cannon with the understanding they could get the cannon back when they asked for it back. And that is what they did because there was heightened friction between the Texians and Mexicans and they thought the Texians would use it on them. In a nutshell, the answer to the request for returning the cannon was the Texians waving a white flag with the words in black “Come and Take It” sewn across it. This started a short battle for the cannon, with the Texians persevering with only one soldier suffering a bloody nose. The Mexicans had two soldiers killed plus they marched away empty handed.

I am very excited to share more Texas history with you next week. The Runaway Scrape is what I’ll be working on for next week’s Mayors Message. Richmond played such a big part in early Texas history and the Texas Revolution and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you! Until then, get out and enjoy this weather Richmond.
