SUMMARY: Under general supervision, drives and operates solid waste trucks in the collection, loading, hauling and dumping of refuse.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS: Solid Waste Collectors are an important part of the community, connecting customers with a way to remove refuse to the Landfill safely and efficiently for processing within city limits. Independent judgement and advanced driving skills are required with a very watchful eye of surrounding traffic and hazards. Solid Waste Collectors are also exposed to occupational hazards associated with refuse collection.

- Drives and operates rear load, front load, side load and open-bed trucks on designated routes.
- Loads trash into truck, operates compactor and automated systems on truck.
- Operates compactor and other truck levers. Picks up limbs and bulky trash utilizing a rear load, dump truck and tractor.
- Disposes of refuse at landfill site. Operates tractors to move and unload trash.
- Checks fuel, oil, water and battery of vehicles. Submits truck repair orders as needed.
- Repairs or replaces trash containers and sub-standard garbage cans as needed.
- Communicates with customers on routes to exchange information or receive complaints.
- Attempts to resolve customer complaints or communicates issues to supervisor.
- Maintains records relating to daily trash pick up activities and routes.
- Helps with community events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:
- High School diploma or equivalent GED certificate.
- Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
- Valid State of Arizona Driver’s license Class B Commercial Driver’s License
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of basic operation of rear, front and side loaders and dump trucks.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures and regulations.
- Skill in safely operating equipment required to perform assigned tasks.
- Skill in learning commercial and residential trash routes throughout the City.
- Skill in working independently with little direction.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
- Skill in directing the activities of inmates as assigned.

- Work is performed in an outdoor environment, subject to driving to conduct work, seasonal heat, and cold and extreme weather conditions.
- Subject to noise from equipment operation.
- Subject to offensive fumes, dust, odors, and vapors, potentially hazardous materials and working around and with machinery having moving parts, and working around moving traffic.
- Subject to standing, walking, sitting for extended periods of time, bending, climbing in and out of a truck, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, kneeling, and pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 100 pounds.
