SUMMARY: Under general supervision, operates heavy equipment in the operation and maintenance of the City’s landfill.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS: This is an entry level position within the landfill division of Public Works and is distinguished from the next level position by the absence of the ability to serve as a lead worker in the training and reviewing of work of others. This position reports to the Landfill Supervisor.

-Operates heavy equipment such as scrapers, crawler tractors with a dozer blade, landfill blade or bucket attachment, compactors, roll-off refuse trucks, loaders, motor graders and pneumatic tire scrapers.

-Conducts pre-operation inspections of equipment, including checking and maintaining all fluid levels and identifying equipment problems and report problems for repairs.

-Performs preventative maintenance on equipment including oil and various filter changes, lubrication, checking wear prone parts and components and cleaning of equipment and vehicles.

-Compiles daily equipment reports, provides and monitors all records of solid waste entering the landfill for industrial and commercial customers.        

-Assists in collecting use fees, preparing invoices for charge customers and estimating the volume of refuse deposited on site for weekly landfill operations reports.

-Performs other related duties as assigned.
