Read with a child - change a life!
Volunteer tutors needed to help young Tempe students thrive

Tempe, AZ - Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Join our amazing group of tutors helping young school children become better readers through the city's AARP Foundation Experience Corps program. No special skills are needed, just your time and encouragement each week helping change a child's future.

Upcoming in-person information sessions are planned through April. The next session is Jan. 25, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., in the Cypress Room (formally lower level program room B) of the Tempe Public Library, 3500 S. Rural Road.

Other upcoming dates are:

- Feb. 7 and 23

- March 8 and 21

- April 4 and 19

Interested volunteers only need to attend one information session; no registration required. Come learn about volunteering with the City of Tempe, our partnership with AARP Foundation and the impact tutors make in the lives of Tempe students.

There are 110 tutors currently serving 15 schools. Parents of the children served by the city often express their gratitude for the one-on-one tutoring. Said one parent, "This program has helped my child read a lot better and understand what she is reading. Thank you much for helping my daughter with her reading."

We're here to support our tutors! Volunteers receive comprehensive training and support services from our skilled City of Tempe staff. As part of the program:
- Volunteers commit to approximately five hours per week September to May
- Each tutor is assigned to four students and meets individually with them for 30 minutes twice weekly during school hours
- Volunteers must undergo background checks, including fingerprinting, and 15 hours of pre-service training
