2022 By The Numbers

In 2022, the department accomplished a lot, including the completion of a new splash pad at Udall and Purple Heart parks, increased attendance for Ready, Set, Rec!, opened two new dog parks, hosted thousands of people at special events and public meetings, and Mayor and Council approved three park master plans.

We are looking forward to what 2023 will bring!

New Disc Golf Course at Lakeside Park

City of Tucson Ward 4 Council Member Nikki Lee, Tucson Parks and Recreation, and the Tucson Disc Golf Association (TDGA) are excited to announce a new disc golf course is now open at Lakeside Park, 8201 E. Stella Road (northwest corner of the park, behind the multipurpose field).

This course is a full 18-basket desert course, with challenging shots totaling almost 0.75 miles in fairways of legal play. This course was made possible by the TDGA, which developed the plans and constructed the course. Funding was provided by local disc golfer-owned businesses Amazing Discoveries, Bancroft and Associates, and HENES Inc.

Registration Deadline Jan. 10 for Leisure Classes Beginning in January

The deadline is approaching for leisure classes beginning in January. Classes offered range from beginning ballet, pottery, jewelry making, photography and more. There will be various options for both youth and adult participants. Make sure to register early to ensure a spot! 

Be sure to check out some of our new classes: 

- Beginning Jazz for ages 5-8 years old
- Beginning Ballet for ages 6-10 years old
- Beginning Yoga for ages 17 years old or older

New Teen Program: Switch City

Teens ages 12-17 are invited to check out our new program, Switch City. This program features monthly Nintendo Switch tournaments for teens ages 12-17, hosted at different recreation centers. A different game is played each month and winners from each center tournament will play in a Tournament of Champions. Registration is open now. Find more information on our website.

Get Paid to Get Lifeguard Certified

Are you or someone you know looking for a part-time job? Tucson Parks and Recreation is hiring lifeguards to operate and maintain the safety at City pools year-round. The minimum age to be a lifeguard is 15 years old. Pay starts at $16.75/hour.

The City will pay applicants to get their Lifeguard Certification through the City’s certification path. The lifeguard class is an intense, fast-paced course, and strong swim skills are required. All applicants must pass a swim test to qualify. For more information on becoming a lifeguard or to register for the swim test, visit the website. 

On Nov. 6, 2018, City of Tucson voters approved Proposition 407, a $225 million bond package for capital improvements via General Obligation bonds. The bond funds are dedicated to improving City park amenities (playgrounds, sports fields, pools, splash pads, and recreation centers) as well as connections (pedestrian pathways, bicycle pathways, and pedestrian and bicycle safety). 2018 Parks + Connections Bond Oversight Commission Hybrid Meeting

The Tucson Delivers Program is monitored by eleven members of the public appointed to the 2018 Parks and Connections Bond Oversight Commission. Their next meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m., virtually and at 900 S. Randolph Way, Tucson, AZ, 85716.

Near Complete: New Playground at Fort Lowell Park

A new playground at Fort Lowell Park, 2900 N. Craycroft Road, will be unveiled on Friday, Jan. 13, at 12:30 p.m. The project included new playground structures with shade and an ADA-accessible walkway. 

This playground was made possible through Tucson Delivers, 2018 voter-approved Proposition 407 bond funds and a generous donation of the latest in play innovations from Burke.  

Complete: Menlo Pool Slide Stairs

The slide stairs at Menlo Pool, 1060 W. Fresno St., have been replaced and will be ready for summer pool season.
