Emergency Services Respond to Multi Motor Vehicle Collision Near Intersection of the Richardson Highway and Wood Way

Valdez, AK – Valdez Police and Fire Dispatch were notified at 5:40 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, February 23, 2023 of a multi motor vehicle collision at the intersection of the Richardson Highway and Wood Way. 

Valdez Police and Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene at approximately 5:46 p.m. to provide emergency medical services and investigate the accident. Upon arrival on the scene officers observed three vehicles which were heavily damaged. 

VFD emergency medical services assessed all four involved individuals for injuries. The driver of one of the damaged vehicles reported no injuries and was released. The other three individuals were transported to Providence Valdez Medical Center for treatment. 

One injured passenger, was transported by air to Anchorage for additional treatment and later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased was identified as 44-year-old Travis McAlpine of Girdwood. 

The cause of this collision remains under investigation.

Valdez Police Department officers closed the Richardson Highway from approximately 5:46 p.m. to 6:57 p.m.
