From: Delaware Governor Matt Meyer

Application Deadline is Now May 12

WILMINGTON - On May 6, 2025, Governor Matt Meyer announced that the application deadline has been extended for the open student representative seat on the State Board of Education. Delaware rising juniors and seniors passionate about making a difference in public education and eager to make their voices heard should apply by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“Students should have a seat at the table when it comes to decisions that affect their education,” said Governor Matt Meyer. “Extending the deadline gives more young leaders the opportunity to step up and help shape the future of education in Delaware. We need their insights, their energy, and their lived experience to ensure our policies reflect the real needs of students across the state.”

The student seat on the State Board of Education provides a unique opportunity for young people to participate directly in state-level education policy. While the student member is non-voting, they play an important advisory role and contribute to discussions on critical issues including curriculum, graduation requirements, equity, and school accountability.

Applications are now due by 5:00 pm ET on Monday, May 12, 2025. For more information and to apply, visit this link.

“Providing an informed youth voice is important to the Board’s work in representing the students’ voice in Delaware,” said Shawn Brittingham, President of the State Board of Education. “We have learned much from our previous six student Board Members and value the insight that students bring to conversations regarding policies and programs impacting all students across our state.”

Applicants must be rising high school juniors or seniors enrolled in a Delaware public school for the 2025-2026 academic year. The selected student will serve a one-year term beginning in July 2025 and will attend monthly State Board meetings, either in person or virtually, with support from the Executive Director of the State Board of Education.

Interested students should submit an online application, including responses to three essay questions and a recommendation from a teacher, principal, or school counselor. Finalists will be interviewed by a panel including representatives from the Governor’s Office and the State Board of Education.
