The Robert Herndon Dearborn Hills Golf Course will celebrate a milestone June 9-11.

Robert Herndon, a Dearborn native, was already a prominent builder and developer when he secured the land, arranged the financing, and oversaw the design and constructed the course in the early 1920s.

Robert Herndon’s Dearborn Hills Golf Course, as it was then called, opened in the late spring of 1923, several years before the City of Dearborn—as we know it today—was created, and was apparently the first public golf course in Michigan.

Herndon operated the course for six decades, and after he died in 1986, his widow deeded the course to the City. Dearborn subsequently invested nearly five million dollars to redesign and upgrade the course in the early 1990s.

The weekend of June 9-11, the course will celebrate its centennial anniversary with discounts on rounds of golf and pro shop purchases, a happy hour Friday from 4-6 p.m., a special “Music Under the Stars” performance on Saturday night by the popular
local band, Sunglasses After Dark, and a food truck for hungry golfers all day Saturday and Sunday.
