Schools and Libraries

From: Delray Beach Public LibraryGood morning!
I am thrilled to share that the Delray Beach Public Library was one of more than 200 libraries across 45 states selected by the Public Library Association (PLA) to receive a $6,000 grant, funded by AT&T, to host digital literacy workshops this fall. These contributions are part of AT&T’s commitment to address the digital divide through investments in internet accessibility, affordability, and the safe use of technology.
Approximately 40% of disconnected students face digital literacy adoption barriers, as well as about 16% of adults not being digitally literate. Introducing and advancing these skills is critical to helping bridge the digital divide. Not only is it important for students and their families to have internet access and computers, but also to have the skills needed to use technology safely, responsibly, and effectively.
The Delray Beach Public Library will host nine workshops on Computer Basics, Internet Basics, & Email Basics from September through December. Computer Basics will cover learning how to navigate the Windows 10 operating system, manage applications using the task manager, find and manage files and folders, save, and delete files and more. Internet Basics will introduce newly connected users to basic terminology, functionality, and navigation of internet browsers, search engines and websites. Email Basics will help users set up an email account, learn how to perform basic email functions like Send, Receive and Reply to an email, recognize and deal with spam, organize, and delete emails and search for messages.
All classes required advanced registration. Classes will be approximately 90 minutes in length with a limit of 10 students per class. Small classes sizes allow for individual attention and take-home materials help with self-paced learning. Students will also learn how to contact the reference department to set up follow-up appointments for one-on-one assistance with difficult topics discussed within the course.
Every student that attends these workshops and completes the class survey will leave with generous incentives including a gift card of $10-20 for various businesses. That’s right, every student will receive a gift card! Also, upon completion of the class and survey every student will also be entered to win a brand-new Samsung tablet! The drawing will be held the week of December 18. Registration is required, Click Here to register
We are so excited to share this opportunity with our patrons and help bridge the digital divide within our community.
I look forward to seeing many of you attend these classes soon!
Have a wonderful fall season!
