Democracy Limited Historic Train Ride

Arts and Entertainment

July 25, 2024

All aboard the Democracy Limited! Thanks to a partnership with the Berkshire Scenic Railway, we are bringing the Democracy Limited's Prison Special back to life for one day only; September 15th, 2024 at 1:30 & 3:00 PM.
By winter of 1919 picketers and protesters for Women's Suffrage were often jailed for their actions, and nearly all suffrage leaders had been imprisoned for protesting.
In February 1919, 26 of the women who had been imprisoned at Occoquan Workhouse and in DC jails traveled the country by train to share their stories. Wearing recreated versions of the uniform they had worn in jail, the women told stories, gave speeches, and reenacted scenes from prison life. They stopped in fifteen cities from Washington D.C. To San Francisco, CA, sharing their experiences in prison.
We are bringing both the Democracy Limited and the Prison Special together thanks to the historic train cars of the Berkshire Scenic Railway. Passengers aboard the train can expect a forty-five minute re-enactment of the Prison Special show, with introductory narration and actors performing in each train car.
