With Americans honoring Black History Month in February, United for Human Rights (UHR) Florida is hosting on-demand screenings of the award-winning film The Story of Human Rights. The film is being screened at UHR’s center in downtown Clearwater, located at 29 N. Fort Harrison Ave.

“The film covers the evolution of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and why this 1948 document is relevant today – especially as we look to those who suffer human rights violations both here in the United States and around the world,” said Ella Rouelle, the Executive Director of  UHR Florida.

United for Human Rights and its programs are based on principles expressed by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, who in 1969 observed, “It is vital that all thinking men urge upon their governments sweeping reforms in the field of human rights.”

“The first Black History Month was proposed by educators and students in February of 1969,” said Rouelle. “President Gerald Ford proclaimed it an official national celebration in 1976. He said at the time, ‘We can seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor through our history.’”

The Story of Human Rights documentary defines what human rights are and outlines the events that led up to the creation and signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations.

“The documentary is a key element of the United for Human Rights global education program. If people don’t know their rights, they will not fight for them,” said Rouelle. “There is a legacy of not just persisting to make Civil Rights a reality, but a legacy of excellence and bravery to be honored.”

The documentary is available to view on demand in the UHR Center Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 1:00pm and 2:00pm to 7:00pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. No appointment is required. For more information, call the center at 727–467–6960 or go to www.humanrights.com.
