One Day Workshop in Port St. Joe with Carla Bosch

Join artist Carla Bosch in a one day workshop in Port St. Joe entitled “Let’s Loosen Up!” We will focus on minimizing brush strokes and allowing your own style to come alive. Carla’s workshop is in ACRYLICS so please note this when signing up. You don’t have to use acrylics during the workshop but it is suggested for the best workshop experience and learning her methods. 

Meet Carla at The Joe Center for the Arts, located at 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe. This is a plein air workshop so you will go to the painting location after meeting at the Joe. The workshop is scheduled for Friday, March 14, starting at 9 am and ending at 4:00 pm with a lunch break. Cost is $120 per person - please register online.  Bring a sack lunch or plan to lunch at one of the great cafes in Port St. Joe.

Opening Luncheon & Cheryl Ploegstra Residency Presentation

Kick off the 2025 Forgotten Coast en Plein Air in style! Join us for lunch with the artists, volunteers, visitors and greater arts community at The Joe Center of the Arts in Port St. Joe at 201 Reid Avenue. The luncheon is from Noon-1:30 pm. Local artist Cheryl Ploegstra will share her residency presentation at this luncheon. There is no fee required and everyone is invited to attend.

One Day Workshop in Apalachicola with Haidee-Jo Summers

Join artist Haidee-Jo Summers for a one day workshop. "Capturing the Essence" is the title of this one day event. Exploring the themes of simplicity and economy - how do we say what we want to say about a subject without saying too much and losing the impact? Discussing focal points, composition, peripheral vision and suggestion. How to suggest detail with just a few brush marks. 

You will meet Haidee-Jo at the Millpond Pavilion, located at 1 Scipio Creek in Apalachicola. The workshop is scheduled for Friday, March 14, starting at 9 am and ending at 4:00 pm with a lunch break. Cost is $120 per person - please register online.  Bring a sack lunch or plan to lunch at one of the great cafes in Apalachicola.

Quickdraw

The 2025 Quickdraw will be held in at Windmark Beach Community in Port St. Joe this year, featuring a wide range of exceptional subject matter sure to challenge and delight all artists. All completed work will be displayed on site for judging and sales. Enjoy beautiful scenery and plan to attend the reception at the Joe Center of the Arts that evening at 6:00pm to hear the Judge's comments and see the works chosen for display. 

ARTISTS REGISTRATION: 

Online registration closes on Thursday, March 13th at midnight EST. On site registration begins at 8:00 am EST on the day of the event and the registration fee is $20. This event is open to anyone over the age of 14 who wishes to participate and has their own supplies and easels. You will choose either the Professional (those artists who make a living in art) or Open Class (all other artists) for the competition. Artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition. Canvases must be blank, and design work cannot begin prior to the 9:00 am horn. 

DATES AND TIMING: 

Saturday, March 15 - 8:00 am - 8:45 am EST: Artists check in at the registration desk, pay if they haven’t already paid online, have their blank canvases stamped, and pick up their title & price label. No canvas will be stamped if painting/design has been begun prior to the starting time. Deadline for pre-registration is Thursday, March 13th.

Saturday, March 15 - 9:00 am EST: A horn will sound and artists may begin painting en plein air style on any subject. The Quickdraw artwork must be created during the Quickdraw time frame. Any violators will be banned from future events.

Saturday, March 15 - 11:30am EST: The closing horn will sound and the Quickdraw artists bring their just completed artwork and easels to the exhibit/sale area for the judging and sale. Artists are responsible for returning on time even if they are not within hearing distance of the horn. There is little turnaround time, so please be prepared with a title and price when the Quickdraw volunteer visits you and establishes your catalog number.

JUDGING/AWARDS: 

All artists must be set up for judging by 12:00 noon EST. Judging will begin at 12:00 noon EST and end at 1:00 pm EST. The Quickdraw Awards are announced and ribbons are awarded. The judge will make comments about the winning paintings selected and a reception will be held that evening at the Joe Center of the Arts at 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe at 6:00pm. 

SPECIAL QUICKDRAW EXHIBITION: 

A special exhibition of a limited number Quickdraw works will be selected and hung at the Joe Center of the Arts at 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe. Please note that all paintings must be properly framed and wired, ready to hang. Volunteers will be available to assist, but artists must provide their own frame and framing materials ... so plan in advance and bring one with you. The exhibit will be open each day from 11 am to 5 pm, March 17-19, 2025. It will close at 5:00 pm on the 19th. There is no additional charge to participate in the exhibit and sale if your painting is selected by the judge.

SALES: 

Each artwork is required to be for sale and to have a title and a price written on the provided label. Each participating artist should consider Forgotten Coast en Plein Air his or her gallery. There will be a 50% commission collected from the proceeds of each Quickdraw sale to fund this event; any violators will be banned from future events. Proceeds from our annual plein air event are shared with communities in Franklin and Gulf counties.

Note: Any work sold prior to 1:30 pm the day of the Quickdraw must remain on display until 1:30 pm. Artwork and artist supplies are the sole responsibility of each artist.

The reception to highlight the selected paintings from the Quickdraw will be held at the Joe Center of the Arts located at 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe at 6:00pm. Join us for light refreshments and see the works chosen for display of the Quickdraw held that morning. Also meet the four 2025 Florida's Finest Ambassadors and view their work. Reception is free and open to all!

These exhibits will be at The Joe daily starting Monday, March 17th through Wednesday, March 19th.  All Quickdraw exhibit paintings not sold at that point will be returned to the artist according to the method listed on the entry form the day of the event.

Led by FCCC board member Joe Taylor, come to enjoy a reception and discussion about their experiences in participating in this event during the last 20 years of its existence. She will demonstrate how she goes about using color and values in achieving believable effect of early morning.

Student Art Day

Join the featured artists as they paint with local students from Gulf and Franklin County schools. The event will take place at the Millpond in Apalachicola. Each artist will work one-on-one with a student to paint their own plein air piece from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The students will sign their paintings and volunteers will help frame them onsite. Artists, students, teachers and volunteers gather at noon for lunch to celebrate the day's accomplishments. The student paintings will then be taken to hang at the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce, 17 Avenue E in Apalachicola. The hours are Thursday and Friday, March 20th and 21st from 9:00am-5:00pm and Saturday, March 22nd from 10:00am-3:00pm.  If you miss Student Art Day, be sure to go by and see their paintings.

Capturing evening light presents some challenges for the painter, but done well, a nocturne painting can evoke an especially strong mood and sense of place. Join Kathleen as she demonstrates how she balances deeper values and light sources in a night scene.

Eastpoint Artist Demonstrations and Reception and Michelle Held Residency Presentation

Watch artists Olena Babak, Poppy Balser, Charles Dickinson, Michelle Held & Morgan Samuel Price as they capture the atmosphere, tradition and lifestyle of the small fishing community of Eastpoint and the beauty of the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve in Eastpoint. At the reception, the artists will present a brief discussion of their paintings. Following this, artist Michelle Held will have a brief presentation of her residency paintings completed this year at ANERR. Free to the public.

Masters' Gallery Exhibit - Inspired Paintings

Lunch and Learn with Mark Shasha

Join Mark Shasha as he presents the topic, "The Wonders of Painting the Sea." Mark will share his observations and techniques of capturing the mysterious and ever-changing properties of the ocean. He will talk about the illusions of reflection and motion and why he loves to bring water into his paintings. Mark is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and The Guild of Boston Artists. 

The Lunch and Learn series is limited lunch seating at the The Joe Center for the Arts, 201 Reid Avenue in Port St. Joe. It will be held at 12 noon on Friday, March 21st, $20 per person. This special event is by invitation only for Maecenas level ($1000 and up) Collectors. Held at the Wet Room this year in Apalachicola, this event brings together artists, collectors, and special guests for an evening of relaxed conversation and relationship building in a beautiful setting. Macenas level Collectors will have first choice in purchasing the reserved paintings from the event. The artists vote on the Artists' Choice award painting at this event, and the winner is announced during the evening. The Artists' Choice painting is traditionally purchased by the FCCC board for its permanent collection.
