The first day of school in Okaloosa County is Thursday, August 10th.
Statehood bills for Hawaii were introduced into Congress as early as 1919. In 1959, Congress approved the Hawaii Admission Act. This was followed by a referendum where Hawaiian residents voted 94% in support of statehood, and on August 21, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a proclamation making Hawaii the 50th state.
International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is on August 9th to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. It recognizes the achievements and contributions indigenous people make to improve issues such as environmental protection. In 2016, it was reported that about 2,680 indigenous languages were in danger and on the verge of becoming extinct.
