From Medicaid Cuts to a Disastrous Attempted Trade War, Trump Celebrates His 100th Day in Office

DES MOINES, IA - When Donald Trump took office 100 days ago, he promised Americans he’d cut grocery prices, stop inflation and end the Russian invasion of Ukraine on day one. Unsurprisingly, he’s failed to deliver on any of them.

Worse than that, he’s created catastrophes like the pending Medicaid cuts. The list below documents many of the crises Trump has already put this nation through in his first 100 days in office:

  • Tariff War: With Iowa already 49th in the country in economic growth, Trump’s reckless tariffs have put the US economy on a path to recession and done even more damage to the farm economy. They’re damaging the stock market, and they’re going to cause prices to rise even more in the coming weeks. All aspects of our economy will be affected because businesses and Americans rely on trade in and out of the country. Americans know this, and many are already fearing a recession.
  • Grocery Prices Still Rising: Despite Donald Trump’s claims, grocery prices are still going up. Average grocery prices jumped 0.49% from February to March, the largest month to month increase in over two years.
  • Medicaid Gutted: Republicans are planning on cutting up to 880 billion dollars from Medicaid. It’s a decision that could take insurance away from millions of Americans just to find more tax cuts for billionaires and giant corporations.
  • Federal Cuts: Hundreds of thousands of workers have been laid off, many of whom worked in critical areas without which Americans will suffer. Cancer researchsocial security processingweather forecasting, even USDA research here in Iowa has been cut. These initiatives being gutted will cause Americans to get hurt or even killed, immediately and in the years to come. Research canceled now is a delayed cure in the future.
  • Russian Invasion of Ukraine: the war continues to rage with more Ukrainian civilians killed by the day. Putin has shown no interest in ending his attacks, something even Senator Grassley felt the need to point out to Trump. Our president is either being played by the Russians or actively on their side, but the result is the same. We stand idly by as Putin kills even more innocent people.

“When Donald Trump took office he promised Iowans he would lower grocery prices, stop inflation and end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Instead, he’s put our economy on a path to recession with reckless tariffs, angered folks by letting Elon Musk endanger Social Security, cancer research, and investments in rural Iowa to give his billionaire friends and giant corporations more tax cuts. Meanwhile, at his direction, Congress is threatening to cut Medicaid, Social Security, Veterans Affairs, the Department of Education and more,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowa’s congressional delegation has done nothing to stop Trump’s devastating agenda - and have even voted to cut Medicaid twice. It’s time for new leadership in 2026 and to hold Republicans accountable for their disastrous economic policies.”
