GOP Senate Candidates Stand by Trump as He Tanks the Economy, Increases Costs, and Raises Inflation

In just one day, multiple reports show that the economy under Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington is in freefall, in large part due to Trump’s chaotic tariffs, which have the full support of Republican Senate candidates Scott Brown and Dan Innis.

  • According to a new labor report, job growth in July was significantly lower than expected, leading to the weakest three-month period of job growth since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The AP reported that “U.S. hiring is slowing sharply as President Donald Trump’s erratic and radical trade policies paralyze businesses and raise doubts about the outlook for the world’s largest economy.”
  • The New York Times reported that consistent, weaker-than-expected hiring “often means the economy is in, or headed for, a recession.”
  • Axios reported that Trump’s tariffs will cost U.S. households $2,400 this year – and with rising inflation, higher costs for everyday goods are “inevitable.”

Scott Brown and Dan Innis have centered their campaigns for Senate around Trump’s agenda and his chaotic and costly tariffs.

  • Brown said that Trump’s tariffs are “very, very important” and said he’s “of course” okay with Granite Staters paying more for everyday goods and groceries as a result. He even said, “Obviously there's going to be a little bit of pain as we've experienced in the stock market, but I think [Trump’s] right.”
  • Innis also supports Trump’s tariffs, calling them “brilliant,” and defending them by calling them a “one-time cost increase.”

The harsh reality for Granite Staters is that Trump’s costly tariffs are taking a direct hit on New Hampshire’s small businesses, and for many, the uncertainty of Trump’s tariffs is “just too much.” The drastic increase in costs has forced some small businesses to lay off employees, as the economy experiences the weakest three-month period of job growth since COVID.

Earlier this week, the Boston Globe reported that New Hampshire is grappling with a massive decline in Canadian tourism. The dramatic drop in Canadian tourists has been “an obstacle that has presented a lot of challenges,” particularly for businesses that rely on the summer season as their biggest revenue source.

“Scott Brown and Dan Innis are running on Trump’s failing economic agenda, which has resulted in the weakest period for job growth since the pandemic, increased costs on families and small businesses, and rising inflation,” said NHDP Chair Ray Buckley. “Republicans are trying to sell a tanking economy and Trump’s billionaire-first agenda, but Granite Staters aren't buying it.”
