From: Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds

On March 6, 2025, Governor Kim Reynolds issued the following statement on the death of Jack Kibbie, 95, a former Iowa Senate president who served for more than two decades in the Iowa State Legislature:

“Kevin and I were saddened to learn of the passing of former Iowa Senate President Jack Kibbie,” Gov. Reynolds said. "I first met Jack when we both sat on the IPERS Investment Board, me as Clark County Treasurer, him representing the Iowa Senate. I later had the great privilege of serving with him in the Iowa Senate. Many will remember with admiration his long and accomplished career in that body, where he served his Northwest Iowa constituents for decades and played a pivotal role in the creation of our community college system. But what will always stick with me is the kindness and grace with which he treated all his colleagues, even those of us who served in the opposite party. Jack was an outstanding public servant, a good man, and a dear friend. He will be missed.”

Kibbie’s public service began in 1960 where he served in the Iowa House of Representatives until 1964, when he was elected to the Iowa Senate. Kibbie represented his constituents as a member of the Iowa Senate from 1964 to 1968 and again from 1988 to 2012. Before his time in the legislature, Kibbie served as a tank commander in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He received a Bronze Star for his service to his country.

Gov. Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff and remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, March 7, 2025 in honor and remembrance of Kibbie. Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
